Overused Video Game Terminology

I think people overuse acronyms to an extreme.
We've got genres: FPS, RPG, RTS, MMO, FMV, etc.
Terminology: NPC, HUD, CRT, KB+M, etc.
Popular Games: SMB, SFII, LOZ, FFVII, GTAIII, THPS, HL2 etc.
Lesser Known Games: ZoE, SMT series, NOLF, etc.

It's gotten ridiculous. I can't even eat alphabet soup anymore without being reminded of videogames!

Agree on "epic". I also agree that "RROD, YLOD and BRICK" are necessary and therefore not overused. I am also happy that "interactive" died in the mid-90s.

I have one to add; "LOL". It was annoying in 1996, and it's still annoying in 2010.

This one only applies to me, in like the whole world, so yeah.

A while ago a friend came up with an adjective to describe whether or not he would like a JRPG, depending on how "japanese" it was. His word was Jerpy. (I believe he came up with it, he may have read it somewhere. I don't remember if he claimed to have coined it.)

Does the game have airships? Too jerpy.
Characters with ambiguous gender? Way too jerpy.
Magical crystals? We'll see...

I think it's a great word that doesn't really have any other synonym. Saying something is "too Japanese" could seem racist, for example.

But another friend, who is actually my best friend, has a habit of saying any game that has a heavily Japanese influence is jerpy. He won't play Blazblue with me cause he thinks it's too jerpy. Same goes with Katamari Damacy. I have to repeatedly tell him that it doesn't apply to those games because "jerpy" is made from the word JRPG.

It only really annoys me because if we want this word to pass on, it can't be bastardized by the time the third person uses it.

how about "awesome"?

It would be "awesome" if you went into space and looked back at the Earth from the shuttle but the word gets applied to so many things that are not, by strict definition of the word, awesome. i.e. Have you played the new CoD? It's awesome!

It's kind of a west-coast American thing as well I think, so I hate to hear it cropping up in me and my friends' discussions. No offense to you Americans! It just doesn't sound right when me and my friends start talking like Californian surfer dudes ("dude" being another expression that makes me cringe coming from friends)

Yeah I completely agree. A big eye roller for me was the whole God of War / Gears of War acronym confusion. I always thought "GoW" was for God of War and then Gears of War came along. Then "GeoW" and "GoW" was used for it. I don't even know anymore. *facepalm*
