oXbox Debug Kit

Post by h8b1llg8ts »

My weekend find at my local swap meet was almost a bust until my wife noticed this find:

To be perfectly honest I really don't know much about the system but it looked like something rare. The guy wanted $40 and with no hook ups or any way to test it I got him down to $25. The bag was worth $10, to me, at least. Well, I came home, plug it in, and to no avail. No power to the system at all.

Since, I have no experiance with the system at all and I was thinking to do my first mod with it (before I knew it was broken). Any hints or tricks on what it might be? Also, what is the purpose of these systems?

These systems were used during the QA process to test code. They had special utilities for controllers and audio. They were very similar to a modded xbox that can run unsigned code. As for the unit not turning it could just be a fuse or the whole power supply. If its the power supply then take it from another oXbox. It would definitely be worth it to butcher a regular oXbox to save this one.

The folks over at assemblergames.com are usually interested in this sort of stuff. You might want to post over there to see what it's worth and if anyone wants to buy it.

Would never sell it but thanx. What kind of tool would it take to open it up?

It should just be a torx screwdriver if I remember correctly.

Great! I just posted over at that website and will reading through I came across some great information.

Like I said I was thinking about doing a soft mod with it but now I think, if I can fix it, is leave it as a Debug Kit. My thinking is you don't see these too often why not fix it to it's original purpose.

What do you guys think?

You probably won't have to softmod it. If it's a debug machine it will run unsigned code natively. Therefore you could probably put XBMC on a CD and boot it from there. At the very least you'll be able to run backups with no problem.

Replace the fuse in the PSU first, see if that works. IF that doesn't work, try and reseat the power connector see if that helps. Last resort, replace the PSU from another xbox. I hope you can get it running. I'd be very interested in seeing what the debug dashboard looks like and what is possible on it.

After reading throught the Assemble site I saw someone had a problem with it not powering up due to the voltage. I checked the back of mine:

I'm thinking it might be a PAL version because doesn't the NTSC xbox run 110v? Am I running to short of a voltage and that might be why it's not powering up?

240V and 50 Hz makes it a PAL model for sure.

That's what I thought. And I can just pick up a simple 110v to 220v converter, correct?

Have a Fry's right down the street ...

What about video? Is that going to be an issue on standard 1080p LCD?
