The GB player actually contains the GBA hardware in it, so it shouldn't be laggy. I guess you just got a dud version.fuctfuct wrote:Maybe i'll fire it up later today and try again. I do have a better CRT TV since the last time i tried and an HD LCD i could try it on. *shrugs*

Great blog, I will absolutely be following it!
About the GB Player performance: I have felt a strange sensation in some games when I used the 'full' display mode in the Player's dashboard. Maybe it was as though the top and bottom halves of the GBA screen were rendering slightly out of sync. This went away when I turned off the GB Player's stretching feature. And certainly, some games basically require the motion blur filter to be turned on else you'll snap the controller in two after a flicker-induced migraine.

yeah the stretching can definitely effect things. But I actually sort of forgot about the filtering! haha. Good call, man.

Yea i knew there was full hardware inside. It has something to do about how its displayed by the cube on a standard tv instead of the GBA's proprietary lcd. Like i said when i first got it i did a lot of looking around and found quite a few people experiencing the same thing. So i just packed it away and never thought about it again. Sucks because it is such a cool idea.Hobie-wan wrote:The GB player actually contains the GBA hardware in it, so it shouldn't be laggy. This is all i could find right now with a quick google.
Ok, on to the gameplay. Personally, I wasn't wowed by what the GBP accomplished. It most certainly does what Nintendo intended it to do: it allows you to play Game Boy games on your TV. However, the results vary widely from game to game. Some problems can be fixed easily through the Screen Filter option. That is, the journey from Game Boy screen to TV is marred by some annoying jitter effects, particularly in games that utilize Mode 7 effects (scaling and rotation, commonly seen in overworld maps in RPG's and the like). By setting the filter to Normal or Soft display modes, the jitters clear right up. There are games out there that I encountered, however, where these graphical glitches don't quite go away no matter what I did.
I didn't have time to play around with it last night but i will try again. Mess around with the filters again. I remember Mario Land 1 being really annoying and Minish Cap being slightly anoying. Some games use special tricks designed specifically for the LCD display on the GBA. Some of those tricks don’t translate over well to the TV and end up making certain parts of the picture scrambled, flicker, and jitter. In these instances, use of the different filter mode may fix all problems.

I just beat Mario Land on the GBPlayer, and didn't notice any "jitters." I'll try to remember to check what filtering options I have it set to. Also, my monitor is a widescreen that's closer to the dimension of the GBA screen than a "square" monitor/tv screen would be, so that might be helping in making it look closer to the GBA look for me as well.

haha, nice. I've been very very good about updating my collecton on RFGen. Though, I have NOT attempted to indicated manuals/boxes or hardware. I also don't have my PS2 games listed since I sort of consider the PS2 to be like my wife's console these days.

Gotcha. Well if you need a hand finding titles for an article or just want another set of eyes, shoot it my way. My knowledge of the original Gameboy is soso, but I know the GBA. Ive played about 80% of its library (mostly thanks to emulation).
