Well, of course. I mean, the development house is under contract to create the game. That means the IP holder checks in regularly and controls many of the design documents. But I still wouldn't call it a collaboration. Not like two developers co-developing a title.

Well in most cases, truly co-developing a game is really unpractical.
From a programming standpoint, the more hands in the pot, the worse off it usually is.

Chrono Trigger was sort of a collaboration. Square and at that time Enix employees working together.

Developed by a group called the "Dream Team" or "Dream Project" consisting of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Kazuhiko Aoki and composer Nobuo Uematsu, known for their works on the Final Fantasy series, and Yuuji Horii and artist Akira Toriyama, known for their works on the Dragon Quest series. Wiki quote

Makes me wonder why a new chrono project hasn't been started since they merged.

Yeah, I really don't know.
The demand is there and Square/Enix is known for milking their cash-cows.
Maybe they are too busy porting Final Fantasy I, II, and Tactics to every mobile platform on earth.

Square seems very invested in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts right now. With the success of Final Fantasy Advent Children, there were a slew of other FF 7 related projects. There is STILL much demand for an FF 7 remake, and that's not even mentioning the hyped up Final Fantasy 13 which we've already seen screenshots of. A game which not surprisingly, is trying to emulate the action oriented style that made Advent Children so popular.

Kingdom Hearts is selling almost as much as FF now, and has pretty much attained the same level of international stardom. There's already evidence of yet another sequel in the works.

With two big, money making franchises I wouldn't hold my breath for another game in the Chrono series anytime soon. As Square tries to make some kind of money on the ill-fated Playstation 3, they're going to go with their biggest guns I would imagine. The Chrono series has fallen out of public awareness for quite some time.

I'd predict that if Sony actually can make the PS 3 successful(which seems like a miracle at this point), then maybe in two or three years after Final Fantasy 13 and Kingdom Hearts 3 have sold a few billion copies, maybe Square/Enix will show some interest in another Chrono game.

Keep in mind, there was a section of the gaming community that reacted negatively to Chrono Cross and it didn't sell as well as a Final Fantasy game. Plus, a bunch of Square employees are at Monolith Soft now(the guys behind Xenosaga)

Speaking of which, they should do that Mushroom Kingdom Hearts thing that EGM was making up for April Fools.

Now, that would be interesting. I gotta say though, Mickey could totally school Mario and Sora

What we really need is a Square-Enix/Looney Tunes cross over. Bugs Bunny in my party? I'd buy that.

Yeah I think the FF7 project thing is meant to be for like 10 years or something.

You never know about another Chrono game. I mean SE are still making Mana games for the DS. We may get some kind of Chrono game for the DS.
