Sony ps3 question

Post by lost_within »

Ok...I have had ALOT of these I wont lie about that at all...but I found something that sounds to good to be true.

I found a new ps3 in my area thats a 60gb claiming to be new. Brand new...well he wrote me back tonight and said quote:

"I did open the system up wed to make sure the console was ok. Its been in my closet for 3 years and I wanted to make sure it would work before I sold it"

Now this went from being new sealed...to me being...open. The price is VERY good for a 60gb that may be new...here is my question

do any of you guys know of ANY information ANYWHERE that will tell you if its a refurb? Or to tell how many hours of use it COULD have? I know I can check the exhaust for scum/dust to give an idea if it was really used or not...but I want something more solid considering can of air can clean that out.

Anyone have ANY information?

Listen like a hawk as the fans start up, after older 60 gig's get broken in the fans will make a soft whir....whir....whirrrrrrrr as they kick up instead of just one solid whirrrrrrrrr like when it's new. Check the memory card ports under the flap for any speck of dust, take a small LED flashlight (Like a keychain one) and inspect the case for scratches if there's any then there's a good chance it's used. Also look to see if there's any PSN ID's stored on the systems flash memory which would survive an HDD format.

Other than that there's really no way to check.

No you just said the answer I wanted!

if he "just turned it on" there would be no account on there. I forgot about this...its not as simple as just a format to clean off ALL accounts, it always stores ONE account. If he only turned it on to check to see if it works there should be none. Also...good to note about the fans...I had no idea they did that.

Now...if he says he wont meet at his house *dont blame him* this may be a chance I have to take...and its a risky one

 Thanks, I noticed the fan thing about a week after I started using my 60GB PS3 when I got it back in 2007.

One of my brother's Playstations came out of the box with an extremely noisy fan, brand new from wal-mart... but it was an 80 gig. ( He has had 4 now due to bad luck. Video output stopped working, and the last one had the YLOD. )

What is he doing to them?!

Some of my friends absolutely treat their PS3's like trash; I'm talking sitting on the carpet turned on all day and occasionally stepping on it to having taken it apart and it's just sitting there turned on filled with dust 24/7 and nothing's happened. It has to luck of the draw I guess, as I treated my PS3 like a saint and it still got the YLOD somehow. Then again I did have it on almost 24/7 for nearly three years.

Actually, I never really thought about it until a few months ago... he always sets them upright. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. But the video would just quit on them. He got them from the same Wal-Mart each time, and I told him to just get a refund and try a different wal-mart. The last one he sent into Sony still under warranty, and it has worked fine ever since.

Well ever since the PS1 the Multi AV output on the back of PlayStations have suffered from finicky image issues due to dust and other crap getting inside of it. Just spin the PS3 around and blow out the port yourself or with some compressed air and voila, your P3 is fixed.
