Any games like Ghost in the Shell (PS1)?

Post by Anapan »

I just played through GITS again today. It's so cool how easy it is to jump from building to building and strafe through the environment in all directions. My favorite level is Mission 7 - Villains lurking in the city.
Can anyone suggest another game with similar freedom of movement like the wall climbing and strafing in GITS?
I tried Stand Alone Complex for PSP, but I didn't like the control in it at all. Is the PS2 version any better? I never really liked the FPS dual analog controls in most FPS games.

That's not nearly as funny as when I say I love the animated series, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

The ps2 ghost in the shell game is nothing like the psp one. The psp one was a first person shooter, the ps2 one is a third person action game. I love that game. It's not perfect, but I found it pretty fun. Standard third person shooting fair but with acrobatic jumping and dodge moves and pretty effects and some fun multiplayer where you can play as a tachikoma. It should be pretty cheap used so if you like ghost in the shell it's worth it.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on PS2 is a pretty good game with an undeserved bad rep. IMO it has some of the best multiplayer on the system. You get to pilot the Tachikoma for one mission but it does not stick to walls and ceilings like the Fuchikoma in the PS1 game. It's a pretty cheap game so you should pick it up.

The only game I have found that comes close to GitS on the PS1 is probably Red Dog for the Dreamcast. You drive around in an all terrain vehicle that would give Hummer H2 owners wet dreams. Though the physics and overall gameplay are vastly different, something about the game reminds me of the PS1 GitS. The truck/tank thing has a main gun turret, lock on missiles and special weapons. The levels are fairly linear but wide open. The best part? Unlike GitS, Red Dog has multiplayer and it's stupid fun. I think my friend put it best when he said the game plays like a hybrid of GitS and Twisted Metal.

Thanks for reminding me about this game! Really cool how you can strafe going up the side of buildings. No flying but having to hop buildings a unique game element. I can't think of any other wall crawler other then Spidey game.

Come to think of it there is this PS2 game though no strafing.
You can run on the walls Hong Kong Martial Arts style but pretty repetitive.
Not the same as in a tank hugging the wall though ..............

I've never played Ghost in the Shell for PS1, but judging from your description and looking at gameplay video, you might want to try out some of the following:

Virtual On (Sega Saturn)

Zone of the Enders 2 (PS2)

Metal Drift (PC)

Thanks for the suggestions - I hadn't even heard of most of these! Glad to hear the PS2 SAC is a different game, I'll definitely pick up a copy. Bujingai looks like a lot of fun, tho it seems to be closer to Demon Chaos (not that that's a bad thing). Red Dog is incredible! It's #1 on my list of games to get now.

I wish I would have picked up Bujingai at $6 when I had the chance. Stupid! Stupid!

If you're just looking for some more fun sci-fi action, you might want to try the Crimson Sea games. Strangely, the first one was an X-Box exclusive, and the sequel was a PS2 exclusive.

There is also an older game PS1 called Spider not Spiderman.
You control an gun toting (not making this up) insect spider climbing on walls.
I swear there is one level where the Spider crawls over Mini Tower computers that look exactly like PS2's on end.
Maybe intuition of PS2 design from this PS1 game?
