That switch box is not the greatest, not shielded.
But if yours is not defective won't cause the problems you are having.

Once you do confirm your internal RF is working , use a 75 ohm shielded A-B switch that takes coaxial cable like this:




Adapt Atari 2600 to switchbox or right to the TV with this:



Still think the best way is bypass internal RF Modulator and do a Composite or S-Video Mod.

What do you mean by signal cables? The colored cables or the RF cable (both are removable on mine). As for dead capacitors on the board, how would you go about testing to find ones that need replacing? I am about to order a few parts from best electronics, are Ataris reasonable to attempt to repair or is this going to be a waste of time/money?

Without a proper Cap tester, inspect the boards for visible damage or if any caps have barfed their guts out. If the smaller metal shield isn't soldered to the board, you can probably pry off the lid to peek inside there if anything looks damaged, since that's RF generator and appears to be your problem if its not just getting a mess from the processor.

Did you change channels on TV to 2 or 3 or maybe even TV channel 4. Also on the Atari switch (next to cable out) flip it to 2 or 3.

Sounds right, Composite mod cheapest, just a little figuring out which traces to solder in Composite and Stereo leads. Plus the mod will put out a lot better video signal.
