How do I update my MAME set?

Post by 4ppleseed »

Hi I have a complete 0.113 set.
Plus I've downloaded the individual 0.114 to 0.118 addons from UG.

When I just drop the content for say 0.114 into my rom folder its trying to overwrite some things, which is not good.

There must be an easier one? Anyone got a step by step? Ta.

Unless I am mistaken, all you do is drop them in your rom directory. Yes it will overwrite some files, but they should be the newer/"better" dumps of roms.

I very much recommend a program called ClrMame. It will get the romlist out of the .EXE for the MAME of your choice then scan your romset to make sure they are present and newest.

It isn't uncommon for a new version of MAME to use newer/different versions of a ROM. It will require it, too, so you can go ahead and drop them.

Keeping your MAME new and tidy is a pain in the ass, really. What I've taken to doing is downloading the .torrent for the newest complete set, pointing it to my MAME ROMs directory and hitting Force Recheck(I use uTorrent). It'll figure it out for me. Voila! A few hundred megs more of games that need a 5GHz processor to run! :P

The thing is the newer files are tiny, just a 200k or so & are trying to replace 23MB files. You know how inside some of these big Rom files there are many parts to the rom? I think the newer one are just an update for one of the parts, therefore overwriting the whole 23MB file with a 200k one would be bad.

Ah, well then dont do that. I apologize for my lack of knowledge in this area, I have not updated my mame since .83 since it runs stable on most of my machines for the vast majority of games I want to play. So I havent updated my romlist since then. Though when I finally get around to building a new pc, well theres no telling.

You are most likely downloading a split-rom that only contains the changed files. That means you really need to use ClrMAME or something similar. It can merge the new files you downloaded into the archives of your current romset.

Hi I have a complete 0.113 set.
Slightly off topic, but where do you recommend getting a complete set from?
