Best animated programs/movies

Post by Gamerforlife »

I know this isn't game related, but this IS the Whatever section. We can let this topic die if no one is interested. I've just been on a Justice League Unlimited viewing marathon with the two DVD sets and I kind of wanted to make a topic like this. Just list some of your favorite animated shows or movies and, if you want to, tell us why.

I'm hoping this doesn't just turn into a name your favorite anime topic. We know animation is big in Japan, but there ARE good shows/movies that aren't from the Land of the Rising Sun. So here's a few of my faves:

Disney's Gargoyles
Not just an attempt to appeal to an older audience, but this show was an amazing blend of Shakespeare, comic book storytelling and mythology. This show drew from many influences and came up with some fascinating stories that was the equal of any good literature. It also had an amazing voice cast, particularly for you Star Trek:TNG fans. If any of you remember this show, the canonical story continues in comic book form, just do a search on Amazon to find them

Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's DC Animated Universe
Faithful to the comics, with great stories, music, animation and a real sense of continuity between each different show they created. They gave us the definitive Batman and Joker(Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill), a cool NEW Batman(Batman Beyond), cool characters who would even become part of DC's comic book universe(Harley Quinn)and stories that truly were for adult comic book fans(there are quite a few lines and moments in Justice League Unlimited that will go right over any kid's head)

Futurama
Funny and edgy when the Simpsons had become safe and stale

South Park
The BEST topical farce show on tv

Fox Network's X-Men animated series(1992)
You couldn't ask for a more faithful cartoon. The Phoenix Saga was excellently recreated

Samurai Jack
This was just a fun show. Little depth, but awesome action sequences, style and great characters like the Scotsman. Full of hilarity too, just watch chicken jack and Jack and the Rave

Transformers the Movie(spoilers)
Everything you want in a Sci-Fi animated action flick. Big, HUGE battles, nice animation, awesome soundtrack and heck, IT'S TRANSFORMERS! It was also much more mature than a kids based movie should be with all the deaths. Sure, this was motivated by the need to sell a new toy line, but still

Cowboy Bebop
All right, I will mention ONE Japanese show. This show just oozes style in its every pore. It is definitely one of the "coolest" anime shows around. It also has deep, memorable characters and a wide variety of influences that give the show a wide appeal. Probably the best show to get someone into Japanese animation in my opinion, since it isn't quite as heavily Japanese influenced as other anime so there is less culture shock

My fingers are tired, anyone else?

I don't watch a lot of television really. I stick to mostly House when a new episode comes out (just love the hugh laury)

anyways, want to get this one out.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends - just sick and hilarious, love this show. I even dance to the opening theme song... and just about every girlfriend I have adores the show as well... great reason to just stay in bed all morning.

Mission Hill
Great show from the Producers (I think, possibly writers) of the Simpsons. I believe they left The Simpsons around season 10 and started Mission Hill. Sadly only 1 season. Follows the story of Kevin French who moves from the suburbs to live with his older brother Andy in Mission hill. Has the great Brian Posehn voicing Andy's roommate, Jim. A bit bland describing it but it's very funny.

Clone High
Another hilarious show that lasted only one season. Too bad it was MTV, they never recognize good shows with potential. I think it was by the guy that made Scrubs. Basically it's clones of famous people who struggle with high school and trying to find himself. The main characters are JFK, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Gandhi, and tons of other historical figures. I think Gandhi said it best with "Sure I buckled under the pressure of living up to the original Gandhi and became a non-stop party machine, but dammit, I still care."

Justice league is awesome, I watched the whole series (JL and JLU) in about 2 or 3 weeks last year. I don't want to watch an ep again because I'll get hooked.

Home Movies
Hilarious show (to me at least) Stayed on Adult swim for 4 seasons even though it got barely any ratings (was also on at 1:30 I believe). Made by Loren Bouchard (of Dr. Katz fame) and Brendon Small (now working on Metalocalypse) and staring pretty much great comedians such as Jon Benjamin, Todd Barry, Mitch Hedberg, David Cross, Eugene Mirman and many others. Really hard to describe because it's lots of conversational humor, so if you dig that type of stuff like me, check out some clips of coach mcguirk on youtube.

Metalocalypse
My new favorite show that is on the air. I'm not a big fan of metal but this show is great. It's brutally violent but with humor of how dense and ignorant the biggest metal band in the world, Dethklok, is. Created by Brendon Small so right there it had me.

Frisky Dingo
Probably the most story driven show on Adult Swim. Every episode has a great cliff hanger and is 10 minutes long. It's by the guys that made sealab so if you enjoyed that, you'll most likely like this. I think it's 10x better. Killface is trying to blow up the world but fails hard at everything he does such as advertising that he's going to destroy the world with postcards that have incorrect spellings on them because he lacks the funds after buying the Annihilatrix. Season 2 starting next week I think so if you wanna watch check out season 1.

Futurama and Southpark for reasons said above.

That's all I can think of for now. Anyone else seen any of these show? :D

I really love the Transformers animated movie. I have the soundtrack CD. Still, I think the movie is actually a kinda crappy, almost nonsensical production. I recognize that I like it so much because of nostalgia. I still get chills when Prime launches forward and transforms in midair. Some of the story elements, however, like the Junkions and the robotic fish, were just pointless filler.

I really enjoyed going back and seeing Robotech. It may be a bastardization of Macross and not as good, but it's a good bastardization all the same.

Hey now... the only good to come out of that movie is Eric Idle's voice playing that one junkion guy.

...

actually to be honest I don't really like transformers... can't say hate, but REALLY don't like. So meh. Go Eric Idle!!!

Disagree. I believe killing off half the cast within the first 10 minutes is a stroke of genius. Of course, ending the movie at that point would have been a good idea, too.

Unfortunately, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is now over. Truly that was the most bizarre and witty cartoon of recent times. Also, I loved the animation in it -- really shows what can be accomplished with Shockwave.

But, I'll chime in and say the bestest, most importantest cartoon evuh, was Ren & Stimpy. It broke the ice, and showed us how cartoons could be funny again.

I was always fond of Sealab 2021 a while back. I still see an episode on adult swim from time to time.

Well, I was with you until the Ren and Stimpy stuff. For some reason that one just rubbed me the wrong way. That and South Park are on my avoid list. Yes, they are funny from time to time, but just like Seinfeld, it's just not worth it.

Have you ever seen Spumko's other stuff. My God, I remember as a kid I loved Ren and Stimpy. And when I heard Nickelodean had this tight leash on the creators to filter out bad humour I was so annoyed. I thought they were sooooo funny.

Then I saw there other stuff... oh my dear God. Those people need to be on Lithium or something when making TV shows... twisted stuff, makes me ill to watch.

and I like fucked up shit.
