I know this topic is sort of dead, but anyone annoyed at how ONLY the HD discs have all the extra features. Don't you love how they're trying to FORCE High Definition down out throats now?

Frankly, I don't even see why one would need this movie in High Def. It's not big on special effects or blue/green screen stuff like Sin City or 300 and I'm pretty sure high definition does not ENHANCE the comedy in any way.

Sigh, this push towards HD annoys me. The industry can't even make up its mind which format it wants to use. Blue Ray or HD? Make up your mind already! Anyone who has a blue ray player can't even buy Hot Fuzz in High Def since it's HD disc only

How many times are we going to change formats now? VHS to DVD, now DVD to HD. I'm sure they're going to try and convince everyone to re-buy all their favorite movies AGAIN once they start re-releasing everything in HD.

Course he f***** was! Thank you Danny!

Bang! Bang!(That really cracked me up)

LOL, you know something about this movie and Shaun of the Dead makes me think of Joss Whedon. The way he could pay homage to and mock a genre at the same time, though he usually didn't go quite as far into the realms of farce and comedy as these movies do since his shows couldn't stray too far from the drama. Though there were exceptions(anyone remember Puppet Angel?)
Wow, someone actually gave credit to Joss Whedon.

Strangely I like the little cunt as well.

I'm actually a pretty big Whedon fan. He seems a bit ahead of his time with some of the stuff he does, like the camera shooting style in Firefly that we'd later see in the new Battlestar Galactica.

And yeah, He certainly seems to have influenced other people whose work I enjoy as I have heard Bruce Timm(from Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, etc)mention him in a DVD commentary and I've heard that the the guys from Hot Fuzz mentioned Buffy a few times in their show Spaced

You know he's currently involved with the new Buffy comics, which he says are canon. Fun reading for anyone interested

I agree with you in principle, as not only does this film not scream HD, but standard DVD owners shouldn't be left out when it comes to special features. However, if you have the means to view it, HD movies are amazing, even ones like this. It ought to look good, special-effects extravaganza or not.

The film industry really isn't to blame for the lack of a standard next-gen DVD format, if that's what you were on about there. It's all the hardware companies wanting to get the edge on the market by releasing their own proprietary formats, something that's happened in the past, and will likely happen again. That said, there's a player out that plays both Blue-Ray and HD-DVD, which sort of renders the format war moot.

In the end though, HD is going to become the standard eventually. The FCC is moving to make all TV broadcasts purely HD within the next several years, and you won't be able to view them without an HDTV. With sets going down in price all the time, it's easier than ever to get in on HD, something that you're going to be forced to do eventually.
Hell, I wasn't really into the whole thing myself until I got an HDTV last year pretty cheap to game on, and now I can't see myself going back to standard-def television or movies. While you may not be into the whole thing now, especially when it comes to movies, it's really worth checking out in my humble opinion.

That's interesting, I guess that does make it a moot point

I'm not arguing that HD looks pretty, I'm just annoyed at how they are going about it for reasons I have mentioned in my last post. High def is pricey too when you factor in having to get an HD tv and an HD player. Supposedly, the PS 3 is a bargain for a blue ray player and yet it still seems horribly expensive(which has clearly affected its sales)

You're right though, eventually everything will be in HD, but I just don't see why it matters. Is is so important that we see every pore and pimple on an actor's face? I recall(on another website) someone commenting on how awesome the Hot Fuzz HD disc was and they had a comparison shot between the DVD and HD-DVD. It was a scene involving a certain character riding a horse down the street in the middle of the screen. There was a comment about how you could read everything that was on the signs on the HD disc and I thought to myself, "Well who cares?". I mean who cares what's on the street signs? It's not even the focus of the shot. The most important thing in the shot is the character on horseback in the middle of the screen, not the various signs around him. Another comparison shot was a close up of Simon Peg. On the HD disc you could clearly make out the hairs on his chin. Oooooooh, I can see chin hairs!! Whoopeee!! Seriously, who cares? I can only see this mattering to people who love porn, and they may actually end up seeing more blemishes and such in HD than they wanted to.

I have seen stuff in HD myself and it is pretty, but I don't go home and cry when I turn on my standard tv. The difference just isn't life changing or anything.

And it's also very aggravating how high def is advertised as making everything look gorgeous, and yet it makes your older games look like crap

So far off topic, sorry mods.

the thread was dead anyways... I don't think anyone will be upset if it goes off topic now.

The thing I have to say is... HD-DVD and Blu-Ray aren't the 'HD' that the NTSC standard is trying to pupport on the American public (I can't say for Europe or any other nations). It's the lower end 480p and 720p they are trying to put on the nation.

In all actuality though, the hoopla about them 'forcing' us to do it in the next few years is a bunch of lip smack gobbily goop. It's actually not the full truth.

This transition was supposed to of already occured a few years ago (the first time I heard about it in 1995 they said by 2003-04... it's now 07'). The problem is that the rights to over the air television is pretty tightly nitted into the FCC rules already put in place. The reason we all have CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC is because those stations (being network stations) HAVE to offer free over the air transmissions to follow such rules.

Converting over to digital requires now a ton of stuff on both parties for everyone to make it through the transfer... and forcing large groups of Americans to purchase new expensive hardware is a bunch of shit.

SO... the truth:

YES there is a transition... the new date is set for February 17, 2009
NO it is not HD... it is DTV, or digital television, which supports HDTV.
YES it requires new hardware. Expense is limited on quality of picture you want. You actually don't have to buy a new TV, it is easier if you do, but you don't have to. The Gov't and FCC is supposedly setting up some coupon bullshit thing (who freakin' knows) towards the purchase of converter boxes. These boxes are already on sale at many stores around the nation. All it is is a freakin' box that converts the DTV signal into a watchable picture... and YES it outputs analog standard def picture.

But shit, seriousily look at it. How many people do you see out there who even know what a DTV tuner is? How many own Digital Displays with DTV tuners built in? Shit most HDTV's today don't even COME with a damn tuner built in. Many technologies are STILL being developed that are soulily for standard analog television use. And we are less then 2 years away? Yeah, like it's not gonna be delayed again.

and again...

the FCC and NTSC had head butts like this before you know. It was something called Colour Television. The FCC wanted to force the entire nation to purchase new televisions so they can convert over to colour TV. Instead of creating a bunch of nonsense (like they are right now), the NTSC set out to develope a colour TV analog signal distribution standard... what people call NTSC standard (NTSC is actually the name of the organization that developes and maintains the standards of public television access). Through some hard work and engineering they developed a way to allow colour TV signals to still work on the already installed B+W TV user base.

So what I'm saying, it's a bunch of crap, don't listen to it yet. Sit it out and wait for the prices to drop and let the early adopters pick up the crap right now (like the schmucks who bought Beta and LaserDisc)

Nice post, lordofduct. That was very informative. Oh, and the Beta and LaserDisc thing, it is funny how people thought they would be the next big thing and they didn't last.
