I see some odd choices on that cover, if it's any indication of their picks. Are those the little Darwina guys?

Yes I picked it up. Bloody £10!

And yes Mozgus, those are Darwina guys. Darwina is listed in there.

Must say I would not agree with the quite a few of those listed games. I mean Resident Evil 4 at no 2? But I general it is a good read. Like someone said, its a great love letter to gaming.

It also contains their top 100 list from 2003 and also 2000. So it's interesting to see how some games get moved around.

Are you serious about RE 4 at #2? I absolutely LOVE Resident Evil 4 and even I wouldn't rank it that high. It is an excellent game but not revolutionary or groundbreaking. That's always a problem with these lists, picking the latest greatest thing without having the foresight to know how well it will stand the test of time

I would like to pick this up though. I still have huge stacks of old video game magazines in my house from EGM, Gamefan and GamePro (back when they had GamePro as a comic book character) and maybe a few other obscure ones, but I don't buy mags anymore with the rise of internet websites. I'd buy something like this though since it is pretty much a gaming tribute.

Yup its at no 2. Heres the top 5:

1. Zelda Ocarina of Time
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Super Mario 64
4. Half Life 2
5. Super Mario World

I dont think we will ever see a top 100 list by Edge that doesnt have Ocarina at no 1. :)

That list is the bunkness...

first I start the list off at 100, and yeah it might be 100. But still, with millions of games out there, I was not expecting to see "CRACKDOWN" for the XBOX360 as the first title on the list. I am slightly turned off.

I slowly go through the list, reading each little tidbit with the game (the site I went to www.next-gen.biz which had the list posted with their own comments), I got more annoyed by the titles chosen and there placement.

Now I will say the list gives credit across most genres, notoriety in games that deserve some for creativity (i.e. Nights, Katamari and Animal Crossing). But for the most part I was left scratching my head for why most of these games were placed in the list. I kinda want to get the full mag just to see why they received the rating they received.

for instance. The top 10 alone leaves me annoyed.

number 10 - super metroid, great game, deserves to be some where close to here... no probs.
number 9 - Tetris, rightfully deserves a 9 or even better. It is a legendary video game on par with Pac-Man (which strangely doesn't hit the list) for being a house hold name.

number 8 - Final Fantasy 12, now it gets weird... FF12? Are you kidding me? 7 hits at 18 but 12 makes the top 10? I'm not a FF fan in any way, I can't stand the series as a total. But how is it a game like FF7 which is THE RPG... I mean if you even mention the anagram RPG, nearly every none RPG gamer is going to say, "Oh yeah, the Final Fantasy 7 stuff right?".

number 7 - Halo... do I need to explain this one? Ok, yes it brought online community, multiplayer action to the masses. And it also help sell TONS of XBOX's... but innovative? creative? unique? umm, no, no, no. It's a clone of a clone of a clone... and wasn't even done well in the first place. It's just damn addicting and really easy to learn as opposed to much harder FPS's out there. put it up in the 30's, 40's... fuck the 90's where it belongs.

number 6 - Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past... now you might be wondering why I have such a big problem with this one. How could lordofduct think Zelda on the SNES doesn't belong on the top 10. There is a good freakin' reason why... I can't explain until later though... ++to be continued++

number 5 - Super Mario World, ok, I'll admit it is pretty top 10 worthy. Mario should be somewhere on the top 10 list... it is freakin' mario. And if it is going to be Mario... this game here is probably you best bet. BUT, BUT, Mario 64 fatefully lands the number 3 spot. And There is one thing Mario 64 did do... it defined the 3D platforming formula... it's a damn close tie between these two bastards... and well, IMO, only one should be allowed to stay... you freakin' pick it.

number 4 - Half fucking Life 2 , hrmmm, really? Who'd a fuckin' thunk this FPS crap made it to the list. Ok, maybe I'll take, the physics are freakin' crazy. But come on, you have 30+ years of gaming to look through and THIS is the crap you tell me belongs at 4?

number 3 - Mario 64 .... - see number 5

number 2 - Resident Evil 4. Yeah, Resident GOD DAMN EVIL Fur... help me now. this supposedly creative series, that SUPPOSEDLY created the survival genre (cough, no you didn't RE), was scary (ermm, I could play Silent Hill 1 with the lights out when I was 13, but RE... phhhhhh when I was 11... NOT SCARY). But yes, I will admit, this series is a damn good series with some pretty addicting gameplay and story. Shit I even like the fucking movies! heh, how sad of me. But to hit the number 2 spot with freakin' 4 in the series at that. Please, spare me, was this list put together by teenage retards who never seen a console older the the PS2? Is video game culture just used to guns, clones, and sports titles that truly classic, creative, ingenious games don't have a chance to receive their credit?

which leads me to 1

number 1 - Legend of the freakin' Zelda - Ocarina of time ... REPEAT TITLE. Remember I said "to be continued" about the link to the past shit. Well, yeah, this is why. This infuriates me... and look through the list... this freakin' series gets it ALL. The world just eats this little bastard up! WHY? WHY OH DEAR GOD WHY!? Did I miss an update? Is telling the same story over and over again entertaining? Hey jack and jill went up the hill... now rob and jane go up the hill... let me fucking guess, do they fall down as well? Yeah, but this time rob is cell shaded!
Oh please, this series is a dried up pile of dog shit. It deserves a damn mention on the top 10 most certainly... but twice? in the top 10 alone TWICE!? And to even hurt us more with the thought... Ocarina is the number freakin' 1!? What did this game do? All I remember it doing was boring the piss out of me, having a very tright storyline, crappy graphics even for its time, a repetitive soundtrack that just grated my nerves, very UNDERdeveloped characters, and overall a surprisingly SHORT title. the only things that gave the game length was the arduous running/riding across that awful grassland to each stupid place. Screw this game, screw the people who made this game, and well... screw the N64. The system as a whole was a giant waste.
Nintendo you sucked, and you sucked for a long time. You constantly released hardware behind it's time, advertised features that other lesser known people already did. And then toted it around on the backs of a handful of mascots that you made back in the mid 80's and you just don't have the fucking heart to euthanize for christ sake. The one time you finally make something any bit close to REALLY innovative (the Wii) I can now say, meh, atleast now you swallow.

LOL, I have my beefs with Nintendo too. The underhanded use of Twilight Princess to sell Wiis and screw over Gamecube owners, the vice grip they once had on third party companies, their determination in trying to make people believe that video games are only for kids, the moronic way they pushed away Square and Sony(which hurt them later), the long list of censored games back in old days that many people don't even know about and yes they do tend to be stubborn and behind the times. However, they did SAVE the video game industry years ago and the N64 wasn't a total waste. Nah, not with classics like Starfox 64, Sin and Punishment, Conker's Bad Fur Day and great games like Mischief Makers. I will say there is a bit too much Nintendo fanboyism out there though.

Back on topic though, sometimes I really think they just try to mess with us with these lists.

I agree with lordofduct on FF12. Although my feelings towards the FF franchise are different from his, I agree that FF12 is certainly not one of its strongest entries and shouldn't even BE on the list

Mario 64? This game defined all of the PROBLEMS with 3-d platforming in my opinion. The silly and uninteresting hub-based castle(compare it to the fun and interesting hub worlds in the Sly Cooper games), bad camera, awkward platforming, silly missions in each level. The original SMB did more for the industry, and SMB 3 and Super Mario World were better overall. Heck, even Yoshi's Island was more fun than Super Mario 64

And yes, two Zeldas on the top 10. That's just wrong. They only needed to list Link to The Past or the original Zelda on the NES. As for Ocarina of Time, I think Twilight Princess was better. If you're gonna put a 3-d Zelda game in the top ten, pick that one. The ONLY thing that was amazing about Ocarina of Time was the final act with the Ganon fights and everything, the rest of the game kind of let me down and I HATED KID LINK!!!! It was just so annoyingly Nintendo. Thank god they scrapped that kid Link crap with Twilight Princess
