What does the PS2 output while playing PS1 games?

What exactly is the difference between 240p and 480i? They both have the same amount of lines...

480i only draws half of each like each refresh, all odds first trip, then evens the second trip. 240p draws everything each refresh. So if its an old NES or something with 256x240, the 480i only draws half of the pixels each refresh. This is why certain color combinations together on a NES make ugly patterns, especially when there's checkerboard shading to fame more colors.
