Might be worth it though, SATA drives are much more common and even cheaper these days. Not many IDE on New Egg last time I checked, and all the SATA equivalents were much cheaper.Hatta wrote:You can even use an SATA drive with an appropriate adaptor. That might be a tight fit though.

Oh, I may have misinformed you about locking. It is necessary to have a lockable drive to use in a softmodded xbox. But yes, you can upgrade the HDD for a softmodded Xbox. You'll need a spare PC though. Do this: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203286

why a spare pc? i just burnt the hdd locker program for it, unhooked my hdd in my pc, hooked up the new xbox hdd, boot from cd with that program, and it walked me right through locking it.

7200rpm should be fine.christoph wrote: Will it be okay even though its a 7200RPM drive? I dont want it to overheat or have problems or anything..
Should I install my new drive and then soft mod, or soft mod and then install new drive?
I would do the soft mod first and then the new hard drive.

Go back and read this thread again. The answer is there. Use the forum search as well.christoph wrote:Awesome, I just ordered it. So just follow the soft mod instructions and then after that is complete I can install my new hard drive. I don't need a mod chip to do this, the soft mod is sufficient? What is the best soft-mod guide to follow for hard drive instillation?

Re: Original Xbox Modding Project
You are making the softmod seem more complicated than it has to be. Just buy an action replay, get a hacked game save, and it will have easy to follow instructions. You should definitely softmod first before installing the HDD. Remember to save any information about your original xbox hdd.
