Please tell me what website you found a 20-pack of BD-Rs for $25; I'd really like to see that. Every time I go to an electronics store, they always have a single BD-R for $25.Breetai wrote:$25 for one? Maybe 2-3 years ago. You can buy cheap brand BD-Rs in sets of 20 for $25 now (double for high quality Sony brand), at least here in Japan. They're NO WAY they are $25 for one in North America or Europe.lisalover1 wrote:Frankly, most used PS3 games are cheaper than a $25 BD-R

Re: PS3 Hacked!
Well Geohot released his hack today (early hours of yesterday, I never know with US timezones). This isn't the hack that a lot of people were expecting, this is basically a memory poke and peek similar to the tweezers hack on the Wii. The worst part, it's only in OtherOS mode, not the GameOS, so unless there's a way of divining the root key from the isolated SPE (the group of SPU of the CELL) then this hack won't really lead anywhere, not as far as native booting of unsigned code on the GameOS. As far as I know, there is no way of getting the root key from the isolated SPE, if you completely isolate the SPE the system won't boot, and the key is not stored in memory at all so peeking while executing code won't do anything either.
So yeah, don't go holding your breath. At the most, this hack will lead to possibly an ungimped otherOS (IE one with GPU 3D acceleration), however that is going to mean a shit-ton of work on coding a custom graphics driver for PPC linux for an undocumented GPU architecture. Going on the progress of the open-source linux drivers for nVidia cards for documented GPU architectures it doesn't look promising, at all.
The PS3 really is a marvel of system security. It is built on the assumption that the software can fail (the hypervisor) but has several hardware solutions to back up it's main defence. IF and I really mean IF a lib exploit, similar to the libtiff exploit on the 2.0 PSP is found, it will only fool the HV, the rest of the system will kick in to make sure that any code is signed, and only then after consulting the root key and the SPE will the code boot. If an injection hack would work (IE injection of machine code into invalid memory space, which technically the above hack can achieve, but only in OtherOS, AKA it's completely useless for people looking for a console version of the PSP or another Xbox) I'm pretty confident that we would have seen one by now.

Re: PS3 Hacked!
Wonder if the cheapest Blu-Ray discs will be good enough (ya know, when this hack actually does something). I remember with the PS2, using just any disc would at best result in a ton of slowdown - at worst, it would kill your laser. The only discs I found that were worth it were Verbatims, but it seems like a lot of places have stopped carrying them.
I just wonder if it's going to be the same deal with Blu-Rays, were only the highest quality media will work.

Re: PS3 Hacked!
I remember when we were kids (elementary school) everyone had a PSone with a modchip (I was PC gaming back then
) and they'd all say that Sony blank disks are the best because they are made from the same company.
lol. If I were sony I'd make sure my blank disks don't work well on the psone.

Sony are losing out in developing countries this generation because they don't offer pricing schemes that match local income levels.
As Niode mentioned it's highly unlikely the PS3 will be able to play backups any time soon, if ever.

Re: PS3 Hacked!
I don't know how Sony could hope to do anything with developing countries anyway. Considering PS3s still get sold for a loss, the only way they count make money is through game sales. Trying to make money through software sales in regions where piracy is its own rather large subculture? Seems above as effective as shooting yourself in the foot.Pulsar_t wrote:Sony are losing out in developing countries this generation because they don't offer pricing schemes that match local income levels.

As for backups never being possible - I highly doubt that. I just think that it won't be perfected until long after the PS3 is relevant.
