I mean it's like the ONLY kind of video people do anymore. What bugs me is that speed runs lack finesse. Players take hits instead of dodging them just to get by an enemy faster, or they just outright avoid combat whenever possible like whimpy girly men. Okay, I'm just kidding with the whimpy, girly men thing, but seriously, I want to see players FIGHT, not run. Plus, it's cool to see someone get through a level without taking a hit. I hate seeing players purposely take hits, it just looks so sloppy.
See I like watching speed runs for games like Contra: Shattered Soldier since you CAN'T take a hit, and you HAVE to kill everything or S rank videos for Devil May Cry 3 where you have to avoid getting hit as much as possible. Plus, you have to mix up your combos to keep your style rating up. Speed in important for getting S ranks in Devil May Cry 3, but it's only one part of the equation. Getting an S rank in DMC 3 requires speed AND finesse.
Just getting tired of the obsession with SPEED, SPEED, SPEED, SPEED all the time. What is it with the speed run craze anyway? Who cares how fast you can finish a game if it doesn't look good? I even see some videos where deaths are done INTENTIONALLY for a faster time. Ugh, so wrong.
Okay, there's my rant. I know some people out there love speed runs, and I'm not saying they should be abolished or anything, but I'd liked to see more finesse based videos out there, and it's actually fun to see someone fight a boss the right way rather than kill it in 3 seconds before it can even do anything
It just seems like most speed runs lack entertainment value. I mean it's fun sometimes if there are some crazy, insane stunts to see(like a Mega Man 2 speed run I saw), but it seems like most of them are just someone running to the end of the level as quick as possible avoiding combat or taking hits intentionally. Boring
Anyone sick of speed runs?

The only two speed runs I've watched are one for SMB1 and one for SMB3. Those are the only games I've played multiple times and actually think are amazing to see someone doing it in ~5min and ~11min respectively. That takes major skill. Speed runs on other games don't take nearly as much skill in my mind. Practice, yes, but most games have lots of saves, but SMB1 and 3 don't. You have to play it all the way through. Over, and over, and over again. Skill. Personally, though, I don't do speed runs. It's just not my thing, so it makes sense why I wouldn't want to watch it...

I can enjoy a speed run if it's something extreme, like finishing a Final Fantasy in just a few hours.
Other than that though, they're not much fun for me unless there is finesse involved. I don't know why there aren't more videos based on finishing the game the fastest while making it look good as well. It's always nice to see a no damage run, but wish there were more of them
One of the great things about video games is that they are a great form of visual entertainment, like movies. You wouldn't enjoy an action sequence in a movie if the hero justs runs from all his enemies, or if he gets stabbed or shot and just runs past the bad guy showing no signs of injury and no desire to give that bad guy some payback. That'd be the lamest action movie ever, but that's essentially what most speed run videos are. They're a horrible reminder of how unrealistic and unentertaining video games can be when players are focusing only on the goal and not the fun of getting there. I love no damage, no death runs because they are more like watching a movie. You'll never see the hero shrug off a gunshot or stab wound in a movie, because they don't have health bars in movies. They live in a somewhat realistic world where they actually have to avoid lethal attacks, and you won't see too many action movies where the hero can just run past his enemies and they're just like, "Um, okay. Let's just let him go."
I guess pure speed runs are great from a competitive perspective, but not always so great from an entertainment standpoint. From what I have seen of tool assisted runs, they do seem better about being entertaining and less sloppy looking, but it bugs me knowing that the player is, in a sense, cheating.
