Netflix streaming coming to Wii

Post by RadarScope1 »

It will require a disc, like the PS3, and of course HD is out of the picture. Still cool news for Wii owners who have Netflix. This is a great service and I use use it quite a bit via my 360.

I don't get it. If you softmod your Wii, isn't there a homebrew app that will play DVDs? But I remember when the Wii was in it's first year, I read a quote from Nintendo saying to add DVD playback support is more than just a firmware upgrade. But if you can do it with a homebrew app, why can't Nintendo add it via a software upgrade?

I think they can, BUT the use of the MPEG codec commercially would cost them $ for each user that did the update. Ya dig?

I think they might have to pay a pretty steep licensing fee to allow the Wii to function as a DVD player. According to Wikipedia, at least, manufacturers pay between $15 and $20 in licensing fees for every DVD player they produce. So, yeah, I guess that's what Nintendo means when they say it would take more than just a firmware upgrade to add DVD functionality.

I wonder how well it will work. I've been reading on other forums about this that Netflix on PS3 isn't that great, at least not as good as it i on 360. Maybe that will all change when their exclusivity agreement is up.

They should just release a DVD player Wiiware. Those that want it can pay the 1500-2000 wiipoints to get it and thatll stop atleast some of the bitching.

actually, it's surprising they haven't done this yet. It definitely makes more sense.
