I have a 42" Panasonic Viera (It's a plasma if you didn't know) and I have my PS2 hooked with RGB SCART and it looks just as good as it did on my CRT. Component doesn't work, since only about 10 games support it in Europe (Thanks again Sony, you set of incompetent bastards) and the ones that work look worse than 480i RGB.
If you are using an LCD it's going to look much worse than a CRT, that's default. ALL LCDs suffer from this problem. The only way you're going to improve picture quality is by changing your TV. You can feed it the best connections in the world, but if it's not native resolution, it's going to look like turd. If you are serious about gaming and want the best then you should look into buying either a HD CRT or plasma next time.
Best choice for PS2 on HDTV?

Tekken 5 supported 720
Re: Best choice for PS2 on HDTV?
Wow, I should consider buying that tv that scales to 1080. I remember there being a thread about that tv, can somebody post a link here?
As for now, I'll stick with my plasma. I've read some people also saying that how your ps2 games look on a plasma will depend on your tv's scaler. I have a Maxent plasma hdtv, that's all I know, so I'll give it a shot.
No love for hd loader?

My friends plasma had the same problem as my LCD. Older non progressive games on component cables had a chopped up look, though it wasn't as bad as my TV. Its a older plasma like 3 to 4 years old now so maybe newer plasmas don't suffer from the same problem.

All I know is my plasma doesn't suffer from those typical problems. In fact I'd put money on it that if you bought a decent plasma, IE Pioneer or Panasonic then you won't have any problems, or regret the purchase. When I was shopping for my TV, all the LCD TVs looked like trash compared to the Viera I ended up buying.

I have the newer, thin Ps2 on a 32 inch Emerson LCD (720p) with component cables. In the system configuration menu, I had to set my Ps2 to the component setting. Also, in the game that I am playing now, God of War, I had to set the game to work in progressive scan mode in the game's otions menu. It looks great. I hope this helps.

Re: Best choice for PS2 on HDTV?
to answer some Q's.
The one regarding the ps3 shows its running 1080P on PS2 games, it will as the console is outputting a 1080P signal it has nothing to do with the games native resolution, the console upscales it as required.
Anyway BUY component cables for the PS2, one of the best things I did. Its an old console so live with the slight image issues. The clarity of the picture and colour reproduction makes it worthwhile, it far exceeds the picture of RGB scart and you don't have the green dvd issue of the RGB scart lead either.
As for the DLP, for those that don't know a very small LCD matrix is used and the image is projected, this results in a very good picture on the actual screen which is generally a sandwich plastic screen.
The LCD vs plasma debate is a continual one, I always side with plasma for thee superior black levels, motion and so on.
Viera btw is a reference to a link system with other input devices, not actually a type of screen or anything.

Re: Best choice for PS2 on HDTV?
I just recently got our first HDTV (Visio, 1080p capable) so this thread has inspired me to try HD from my old PS2. I have quite a few games already that are on the HD list, the 16:9 list or both. I really want to try Gran Turismo 4 in full 1080 to see how it looks. This is just for fun since the new HDTV is typically ruled by the wife's TV watching needs and my games are relegated to an older SDTV CRT 31 incher capable of S-video inputs at the most. That said, I didn't want to spend a bunch for component cables, but I found a used Monster Cable set for $8 at a local retro game store!
The new TV even makes standard DVDs in progressive scan mode look pretty darn good and most HD channels look great too, can't wait to see my GT cars in full 1080.

GT4 in 1080 is a bit of bullshit to be honest. It's only available in one mode, the photo view mode. That's it. So it's completely pointless.
