Best choice for PS2 on HDTV?

I've heard that you can buy component cables that connect the PS2 to the HDTV, but I've also heard that it makes games look like crap, so that's out.

The choices are between a b/c PS3, or an HD Loader.

Do any of you have any experience with the HD Loader? I'm planning on playing fighting games like Guilty Gear, and I've read that with the b/c PS3, there's a slight half second delay or something that just kinda screws your timing over.

I'm not sure if HD Loader might have the same problem, so I need some input on this.

Where did you hear this? I have my slim PS2 hooked up using the official Sony component cable on a CRT TV and it looks much better than S-Video... thus making it the best option for a PS2 in my eyes.

But that's an sd tv right? I'm trying to get some games on the big screen, and that's where the problems come in. The ps2 looks fine on my sd in my room, but I'd be cool if I didn't have to go from room to room to change games.

It's an HDTV CRT. Sony Wega KV30HS-420, up to 1080i, although PS2 can only output 480p. Even if you play a PS2 game in a BC-PS3, you are not going to get anything better than 480p.

My PS2 looked great on my old HD CRT with component. The PS2 on my new LCD with component looks awful. It looks better with S-video, but if you have the money though I suggest a BC 60GB PS3. I bought one hooked up vis HDMI and it looks great with smoothing on.

It really breaths new life to my PS2 games. Be sure to get the 60GB version, from what I understand its the only one that has the PS2 hardware in it. The 20GB version may have the hardware in it but the 80GB uses emulation to play PS2 games and I guess theres compatibility issues and some games don't work. I own about 250 PS2 games and they all work with my 60GB PS3.

Actually somes games like GT4 and GOW2 support 1080i. On a BC PS3 theres a option to smooth out the graphics and really makes a difference. It cuts down on the jaggies and improves the picture greatly. I believe it upscales the picture as well. When playing a PS2 game on my PS3 my TV says its in 1080P mode but this could be my TV lying to me. The PS2 doesn't offer this options, and having a wireless Dualshock is pretty benefical as well.

I don't feel like my PS3 60GB does any better of a job than my PS2 slim on my 46" DLP HDTV, but it is subjective.

The only game that supports 1080i is GT4. There are no other games on the PS2 that have better native resolutions than 480p.

With regards to the PS3 upscaling, yes, it's capable of smoothing jaggies, but it negatively affects things like color saturation, so you have to take the good and bad. Take a look at this IGN comparison: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/793/793775p1.html

PS2 does look better on CRT. LCD you will see dot crawl on Retro consoles. However LCD or CRT going Component is the best which allows 480p. The 2 PS2 games that go to 1080i are GT4 and Tourist Trophy.

If you have a PS2, HD Loader/ HD Advance simply allows PS2 games to run off Hard Drive. No timing delays, games do load faster. The USB version is slower that might be where you are hearing about the timing delays. If you go this route look for the fat Ps2 and use an internal hard drive.

The PS3 is great, model number CECHA01 has the Emotion chip will run PS2 games. Look for 4 USB ports with 60gb hard drive. It also does allow some smoothing.

Enderfall, God Of War 2 has a hidden HD mode that allows it to run in a resolution higher than 480P, I guess theres slowdown issues with it though. I was simply pointing out that some PS2 games run in higher resolutions than 480P since you said 480P is the highest you'll get.

As far as PS3 BC looking just as good as a PS2 Slim it that all depends on the TV your using. When I had my PS2 Slim hooked up to my Vizio LCD, the progressive enabled games looked almost as good as it would on a BC PS3, but the older nonprogressive games looked chopped up and almost unplayable on my TV.

I used Sony components when doing this, I switched to Sony S-video and it looked a lot better. When I got my 60GB, the smoothing option made all the games look better than on my TV and the chopped up picture was no longer there. My brothers Sony DLP didn't have the same issues as mine when he played his PS2 with components, I guess this might be only a problem with some LCD style TVs.

Quite possible that LCD's (and maybe Plasma's etc.) suffer more than projection televisions such as DLP.

To the OP, this might be a consideration considering your current set-up.
