Starting Over

I have been forced to start my collection over. Fell on some rough times and was forced to sell a great collection (EarthBound and Guardian Heroes were so hard to let go of). These times are coming to a close and I was wondering where you guys thought a good place to start rebuilding would be. A friend from the south is Sending me a Dreamcast to get me going but I can't decide where to go from there. 2600? Jaguar? NES? AES? Genesis? Decisions!

Choose something that you have the most interest in. If you don't absolutely love the thing you are collecting, why bother?

You know it's funny, I recently converted a bed room into an entertainment room. While moving all my games into it, I looked over some of the discs. Between the carelessness of my youger years and the fact that so much of my collection was bought used, I have a lot of stuff with light scratches, rings, smudges, etc. It's actually got me thinking about rebuying a lot of my stuff just so I get better discs, or maybe look into getting some kind of buffing/resurfacing machine

Personally, I'd said go with some old cartridge based stuff. They're easy to take care of, relatively cheap(well depends on the title) and if you really want to show a lot of other collectors up, buy complete with box and instructions. Since most people just go cartridge only, which is too easy. I think it's rather impressive to see a cartrige collection for any system with COMPLETE games

Or how bout a portable collection? There's tons of cheap DS and PSP titles out there now.

Obviously I can't recommend starting out on a Saturn or Neo Geo collection. those things are so damn expensive.

Neo Geo AES. I just started collecting that, and it's by far the most fulfilling system to collect. Gameplay on that system is kind of shallow though.

Whats a good price on an AES? They seem to run pretty high.

If you are going for complete games with box and manual I'd start off with a Genesis. Because the boxes of Genesis games were much more of a case than NES boxes, they are easier to come by. If not, I'd go with an NES

I second 8-bit legend with Sega Genesis; they're easy to find and have great games!

Not the MVS - the carts are massive! Not many good games on the Neo, the good ones command big prices.

Personally, I like game carts rather than CD's, CD's are noisy, you need to be careful with them (comparitively); whereas carts can be literally thrown around and stored badly and still work fine.

Funny thing about the AES is that the consoles themselves are region-coded, not the carts. So that means that a JPN Neo Geo will play carts from any region but in Japanese and a US Neo Geo will do so likewise in English.

That said, the JPN Neo Geo tends to be more common and cheaper than the US one. But either way, I'd say you're getting a pretty good deal if you can land one for 200 or less.
