The only thing that I ever heard about (but never experienced) was the Thompson drives either dieing or getting multiple DRE's prematurely. I had a launch XBOX and it was still working great when I sold it off in 06. It had a Thompson drive too!

Yeah the Thomson drives are terrible. That's the only real complaint I could say about the old xbox, they are built to last by and large. They're definitely more durable than the PS2, maybe not the Gamecube, I've dropped mine down the stairs and it still works perfectly but definitely leagues ahead of the PS2.
