Yes GameStop does take broken PS3's.

We don't take TAMPERED PS3's though, sorry.

You could have just pushed eject when the light was simply red and it would have ejected the disc like when it's normally in standby you know.

Anyhow, no matter which next gen console or revision you buy THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, you can thank ROHS restrictions for that. The unleaded solder used in construction as mandated by ROHS compliance results in chips drifting and melting solder joints due to the extreme heat generated by the system. Take it to someone with a BGA Workstation, have them reball the system with leaded solder and the problem will be permanently fixed.

Just backup & sync trophies (if you plan on buying another) to an external drive and then do a format in the system options.

Beware though, even if you backup and sync you still might not have all your saves and trophies. I tried to transfer all my saves, trophies and games from my 40GB PS3 to my 60GB PS3 and my uncharted trophies didn't transfer and my PSN Crash Bandicoot didn't transfer and Sony have no record of me ever buying it on my account apparently... So that's forever stuck on my 40GB PS3. There were a few other problems I noticed but I can't remember what they were now.

The transfer process is a joke on the PS3. On the 360 you just plug your hard drive into a new 360 and it asks you to sync your gamertag, after 10 minutes or so, all your license/gamerscore information has been downloaded and all your achievements and games are there.

I just got me a slim today. Everything is new now even the d3 controllers, which is a good way to start New Years. Right now is doing the update and it's running quiet. The only downside is that I did my backup on a memory stick and the slim no longer carries the slot for it, which is really sad I think. BBC really held me back for too long with all the hype people had for it, but I'm glad I made up my mind this morning.

You should just be able to copy the PS3 folder from the memory card to a USB memory stick or hard drive and then you can transfer it to the PS3.

Have fun with your slim.
