I was wasting time on eBay just looking at retro consoles and ended up buying a Sega Nomad with a battery pack for US$50. I always wanted one but now I have a few questions.
1. I know that it will work with a Genesis 2 AC adapter. Will a Mega Drive 2 adapter work as well (does it have the same plug/output?)
2. How is the compatibility with PAL games? I expect it to be the same as for a 60Hz modded PAL Mega Drive, am I right?
3. Batteries. Can I use rechargable AA? How long can I expect them to last?
4. Replacement screen. Is it difficult to change the screen if it is too badly scratched? I am only semi-competent in this sort of things.

A few Sega Nomad questions
Mostly harmless
Re: A few Sega Nomad questions
Ok first off congrats on the nomad. Secondly the Mega Drive adapter should work. At least I know the Japanese region one does. You can use rechargeable batteries expect no more than about 4-6 hours out of them the battery life of the Nomad is horrid. The screen is kind of tricky to change so you may want to look at having it done by someone if your not of steady hands. As for region compatibility not to sure. Hope this helps somewhat.

Re: A few Sega Nomad questions
funny enough that I was about to ask a question about this...so to confirm the genesis 2 ac adapter works well with the nomad?
Re: A few Sega Nomad questions
I'm almost positive that there is a guy here who installs new LCDs, screens, and custom long-life battery packs in Nomads. He had pics of his work, and it looks seriously awesome!
*Edit: Found the post! Decent price for the work that he is willing to do.

That's probably the greatest mod ever. I am tempted to get a second Nomad just to try it!

Re: A few Sega Nomad questions
I can answer these two:
3. Batteries. Can I use rechargable AA? How long can I expect them to last?
You can use rechargeables! I have for years and have had no problems. I've gotten a little over 6 hours out of newer high quality Energizer rechargeables. Volume, game type and screen brightness can affect this time.
4. Replacement screen. Is it difficult to change the screen if it is too badly scratched? I am only semi-competent in this sort of things.
From what I've seen/read, it's simple. All you need is an exacto knife or box cutter. Carefully lift the edge, avoiding scratching the unit itself, and stick the new screen on (assuming it has adhesive)
congrats on getting a Nomad!

Re: A few Sega Nomad questions
Just a fast update. I got the Nomad and love it. To answer my questions:
2. Megadrive 2 power supply works great. It's output is just like the Genesis 2. Obviously.
3. Compatibility with PAL games is IDENTICAL to a 50/60Hz modded Megadrive.

can anyone tell me how to spot one of these in the wild? If I go to a retro store and they have a box of AC adapters, will this actually say Genesis Model 2 AC Adapter or something like that?brycester wrote:Yes the gen 2 ac adapter works with the nomad.
