Back to basics, why not?

When I play Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgegog I just miss "some more".
Today, many years after those gems were released, videogame development has advanced so much,
It’s probably so easy to create new levels for this games. (There’s even an editor on the web for SMW so you can patch your rom..)

I enjoy New Super Mario (DS) but hey! I would love to see a true new game with the old style in.
Let’s just call it Super Mario World : The Lost Levels. ^^
Just imagine Nintendo designing 200 new levels with the software of SMW. A software they already have from the past!
I don’t mind at all if the game looks like 1992 as far as they give me new levels / new challenges.
I think 200 levels would perfectly fit in a DS cart.

Question is why don’t they do that if it costs little effort (actually level design & maybe new tunes if you want but not mandatory)
They think it won’t sell or what?

What's the point? They ARE more levels for Sonic. Just grab a copy of Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles or Sonic CD. Super Mario World had enough levels in my opinion, especially considering it was very similar to the already released Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels AND Super Mario Bros 3.

These games have already been rehashed on Nintendo's portable systems as well, many of them playing exactly like their predecessors. Frankly, I think there's enough old school Sonic and Mario games on the market already. It's almost oversaturation

200 levels? I don't think any game can stay interesting for that long. The designers would run out of ideas before they even hit 100. That's why I like older games. They don't overstay their welcome like 90% of today's games do. They're short and to the point and don't feel padded out to extend the playtime with lots of boring stuff(like item fetching and box pushing puzzles)

Try some other platformers. Sonic and Mario aren't the only game in town. Why not play Ristar? Or some of Sega's Disney games? Or Rocket Knight Adventures?

I know both the Genesis and S-NES have TONS of platform games. I'm sure you can find a good list on this site.

You make an interesting point Elder but I'd have to agree with with GFL. There are nearly 100 SMW levels (96 I believe?). And after a while design would get watered down. Especially with players modding levels -- no offense but Joe Gamer isn't Miyamoto.

I understand what you mean about just wanting "more" though. Re-reading some of the interviews and mag articles about the Sega CD and the vaporware SNES CD here on Racketboy's site reminded me that I used to have this very same wish back in the day. When I read these stories back in the day about how a CD could hold 500 megs of information, I thought "yeah, let's get a Zelda game with 19 dungeons instead of 9 or a mario game with 500 levels instead of 50 or 100." But instead the developers of the day used that space for voice-overs and shit FMV sequences. It's funny reading the SCD interview with the guy talking about how you're basically playing a movie. The beginning of the end in some ways, looking back on it...
