Whiplash (Backlash) apparently. So... where the heck is the Mandarin? You'd think they would include Iron Man's primary enemy by at least the 2nd movie.

Not a fan of the magic idea at all. Which is a huge reason I'm really concerned about the upcoming avengers movie. Favreau did a great job of making the first Iron Man somewhat realistic, yeah it had over the top Hollywood spectacle, but the superhero aspect of it was done in a Michael Crichtonesque way. It's like having a sequel to batman begins where ra's al ghul springs back to life from the lazarus pit. It may work in the comics, and it may work in a movie where the initial setup lends itself to a more fantasy/magical setting, but that's not how the first Iron Man was done (and I'm glad). Now they're going to make an avengers movie where Iron Man teams up with the hulk (sci-fi), Captain America (sci-fi) and Thor. . . a fucking norse god. Yeah, I understand the avengers consisted of those characters in the comic, but it's like having The Dark Knight meets Superman returns, they're just not part of the same world.

"Choosing a villain was difficult, because Favreau felt Iron Man's archnemesis, the Mandarin, would not feel realistic, especially after Mark Millar gave his opinion on the script.[44] He felt only in a sequel, with an altered tone, would the fantasy of the Mandarin's rings be appropriate"

this is from the wikipedia page from the first film (not reliable but its something)

I can kinda see their point, but this is the Mandarin we're talking about. Oh well, just as long as the enemies stealing the secret of the suit's power doesn't become routine, like I'm starting to fear it will.
