Flawless Mod Chip Install!

Post by thegore »

Since there are so many threads about modchip difficulty, I thought it necessary to say that installation success is possible. I opened my $14 ebay Saturn today to see a 32 pin chip staring up at me. It took a bit of reconnecting, and a trip to Radio Shack for desoldering braid, but I'm playing a ripped Burning Rangers disc as I type (well, not literally). Take things slow, follow the instructions, and have desoldering braid handy, if you get too much solder on the power connection, things won't work at all, it seems. This was my first real experience with such small technology as well...I have done some passive electronic work in electric guitars and modded effects pedals, but thats a whole other ball game from this job. Like I said, look at both the instructions and troubleshooting pages, be prepared to file, and, soldering noob, you too can mod your Saturn. Thanks. 8) [/list]

We need more of these. And for those who don't know, I had pure success as well.

Yeah for success!
People sometime email me to let me know they got it working, but rarely do we see a forum post :)

Mine took a bit of filing down on the pin connector to make it fit, but a year later i stil have no problems.

Flawless victory!

Hey, does anyone have a problem where their mod chipped system, after an hour or 3 of play, starts mangling sound effects and crashing in games that are known to use the sound chip for purposes other than sound, like PDS?

Add another successful modchip installation to the list. I got my chip in the mail yesterday and had a friend solder it in for me last night. When I first tried it out, all it would do is to play back the game music for both original and copied disks. I remember reading about other people who had that problem. I reseated the ribbon cable into the chip and the chip into the main board and everything works fine. Chalk me up as another satisfied customer!!

What are you looking for pictures of? Actually, my install hasn't been perfect. It still comes up as an audio CD sometimes, but usually I can get it to work with a number of power cycles and resets. Not sure exactly what the deal is, but since I can get it to work, I will leave well enough alone.
