After spending a bit of money on a Dreamcast and PSX games, I'm finding that I don't even feel like playing them anymore. It's almost like I love the concept of retro gaming, but when it actually comes down to playing them, they don't do a thing for me. One of the things that bugs me is the graphics. After playing Gran Turismo 2 for about 30 minutes, my head and eyes started bothering me. I'm thinking that it actually comes from the fact that the graphics really aren't that good. Couple that with the load times, and it just becomes too aggravating to be enjoyable. As far as the Dreamcast goes, I think it suffers from the fact that it only has a single analog stick, making it awkward to play games like Quake 3 or Gundam 0079.
So am I the only one that prefers to read about retrogaming more than actually playing the games?
Getting bored with retro gaming?
It can be hard getting past the old graphics. I guess its one of the main off putting things about retro gaming. I does'nt really bother me personally but I can see where your coming from (after playing GT4/ GT5 HD demo it would be very hard to play GT2!). I guess that the fact that old games look even worser on new HD tvs doesnt help either.
I guess one solution could be to play games via emulation? i.e. where the graphics can be upscaled, filtered and smoothed. Just take a look at JSRF on the Xbox and then look at it running on the 360....Looks amazing!
I'm actually torn between retro and and mordern day gaming. Do I spend my limited free time playing retro or modern games!?!

Overdosed on Gaming
Overdosed on Gaming
I'm getting bored with ALL gaming. But I know what you mean. Regarding the PS1/Saturn era, I just cant tolerate loads times anymore. Also, most of those games were just too slow paced and too cinematic. These reasons lead me to say that the 32bit generation is aging faster than any gaming generation we ever had. I already feel as if 32bit games are harder to accept for what they are than 8 and 16 bit games, as long as nostalgia is taken out of the equation.
Also the single analog stick never bothered me on DC. I've never quite gotten the hang of the right stick on other pads. My left thumb is far more accurate. I found myself stranded on my boat in Ape Escape, because I just could not row the ores in sync with each other.

ePSXe is the only way to go for PS1
Load times are almost non-existant for ISOs.
I haven't been playing much lately, but I think the key is finding those timeless games that don't depend on graphics too much.

How could you get bored? Today I played about 3 hours of Battlezone for the 2600 (Really, really old 3D) and I didn't even get tired of it.

What are you talking about? It doesn't remove or shorten any load times. It's emulating the machine, which is locked at 2x speed extraction off the disc, if I remember right. If the load times on your ePSXe are any better than your real PS1, then your PS1's laser is dying or the discs are in poor condition.racketboy wrote:ePSXe is the only way to go for PS1

Now a PS2 has a feature you can turn on which allows the drive to load data faster than 2x on PS1 games, but it usually causes a lot of problems.
You can emulate a data interface and still speed things up. In ePSXe, if you have the right CD-ROM emulation plug-in, you can have it load data faster than 2x, no problem. 2x is an artificial limitation. With only a couple exceptions that rely on explicit CD response times, even an original PSX would simply go when data is loaded and wait if it isn't.
Yeah, I'm using a plug-in. Forgot about that.marurun wrote:You can emulate a data interface and still speed things up. Again, I rarely have load times. Sometimes I see the loading screen and then it disappears quickly
