hdloader question

Post by wakeup »

I hope someone can help me on this.

When I bought my modded ps2 with the hard drive and network adapter, the owner before had games in the hard drive and when I select "play" for the games using hdloader, it loaded perfectly.

Then I wiped the hard drive out to put my backups in the hard drive and none of my newly put-in-hard-drive games work when I press play in hdloader anymore. (I'm using the put burnt game in the drive and copy it to the hard drive through ps2 method) I read around and see something about "hdld_svr.elf". Am I suppose to have some file in my memory card (wiped out the content inside too...) or hard drive to enable the burnt images to play? I know I'm missing something...

The hdloader disc I was given is burnt and has some other programs in there (xploader, hddump and others). Am I suppose to use the other programs?

First off, what version do you have?

When you wiped the drive, how did you format it? You have to format it using the HDloader software.

Are you sure your ISO's are good in the first place (are you copying games from actual DVDs you own, or are you copying them from your computer?). If so, check compatibility with each game. Some games need some options checked off in order to run. And some games, FF12 for example, need to be patched to run.

I have tried different versions of hdloader so I don't think it's the program's problem.

I format with hdloader.

Every Iso doesn't work so it's not the images or compatibility issue.

Edit: I don't know if this matters. But the hard drive I'm using and that came with the system is a 2.5 one, but hdloder can write and read the drive so I think that's not the problem? I have taken the hard drive out and put back in since it stopped playing the games but it still reads the hard drive.

Different version of the software have different compatibility. And by each game I meant, some games need a special option checked off from with in HDloader in order to boot the game.

Yes I have tried the special options choosing compatibility.

It sounds like you're putting a backup ISO in the computer and using HDLoader to copy from it. I don't think that will work. You need to use original media.

If you're using Free McBoot, you need to boot with FreeMcBoot and then select HDLoader on the elf. If you have a pressed (original) HDLoader CD, then you can boot with HDLoader.

Personally, I would pull the drive out and hook it up to your PC. Use WinHiip to format it and put your games on it (It can read original games or it can use ISOs). It's the fastest and best way to transfer games to your hard drive.

What is the condition of the hard drive? Is it old or new? You may want to hook up to your PC and do a low-level (not Quick, regular) format which will detect bad blocks. I had problems booting my games once and it was due to the hard drive having a massive amount of bad blocks.

Actually, I think bad blocks in the hard drive is a big reason because I've seen copying which end up with many bad blocks. I'm not too great at computers though, so I think I need an external hard drive enclosure to transfer stuff right? I also have a unused 3.5 IDE hard drive and somehow it doesn't fit into the ps2 (I thought the network adapter is designed for 3.5 IDE...), not sure why it doesn't fit.

Also, I'm burning the ISO into a disc (and this disc can be played regularly by the ps2) and using hdloader in the ps2, putting the burnt disc in for copying to the ps2.

The placement of the power and data plugs isn't standardized on IDE drives. The network adapter give you a little wiggle room, but yeah some just won't fit if one is a mm to far one way or the other.

Oh I see...

I just tried plugging in my 2.5 hard drive into my desktop thinking it might work... but the computer wont start. So I'm guessing I need an enclosure to access the laptop harddrive?

Also, if I put my 3.5 hard drive in an enclosure, is there a way to hook the enclosure to the ps2 through cables? And if it works, would the load time still be fast?

edit: oh, I was putting it as master drive, now under slave it just doesn't detect...I guess thats why its call a laptop drive.

A 2.5 drive isn't going to work with the network adapter without a some sort of 3.5 to 2.5 drive adapter that won't be easy to find one that fits if at all. A HD had to be attached to the network adapter AFAIK which wouldn't happen without hacking and modding the case. I don't think there's a way to talk to a drive in a USB enclosure hooked to the PS2.
