Do U.S. XBOX360 Games work on a Japanese XBOX360?

I have a Japanese 360 with only Japanese games. I want to buy some US games, but I don't want to risk buying a game and it ends up not working. I can't borrow a game because all of my friends have PS3s. I went to two gamestops and I asked the staff, one guy said "Probably not" and another guy said "Nope, it will absolutely not work!" But I didn't trust these guys. They seemed like they don't know anything.

It depends if the game is region free or not (Many are), abgx360's site has a database which also states if a game is region free or not.

Some US games will work on a Japanese 360 and some won't. I hope this compatibility guide helps!!

Many more US games are region free than Japanese games, at least.
In fact, I think almost no japan exclusive games can be played on any other region console.

I usually get all my US and non Japanese region games for my Japanese 360 from Playasia.com. The Asian version is your best bet as they are usually bilingual and cost 20% less or than their American versions. I have a handful of US games like Tales of Vesperia, Sega All-stars tennis, Blue Dragon, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

I hope Final Fantasy 13 is region free or gets an Asian English edition. I really don't want to buy a PS3 just for that.
