You just can't expect games like Echochrome, Critter Crunch, Castle Crashers and many others to release at retail and make a profit. It just won't work. They're creative, they have great gameplay and they aren't generic male power fantasies - that's three strikes against them at retail, dooming them to fail.

You gotta stop looking at it as if Digital Distribution was only made to screw you out of ownership. I didn't own any of the arcade machines that I endlessly dumped quarters into as a teenager, but that didn't make them any less fun.
They should've released themed compilation discs with five or six games on them. Like a shooters disc, puzzle disc etc, etc. That way they would make a profit, expand their games to non online customers such as myself and everyone wins. And downloadble games are made to screw you out of ownership. Try reselling a downloadable game on your console, you can't because you don't own it! Every game I have I could sell if I wanted because its mine.

Fact is, I'll still be playing my Dreamcast, PS2, SNES ,NES and Genesis games 10 to 15 years from now. Good luck trying to play you downloadable games on your 360 or PS3 20 from now. Maybe if todays consoles had good build quality and durability maybe I would feel different about DL games. Todays consoles are so fragile and cheap and you'll be lucky to get 8 to 10 years out of console today.

Digital distribution is pretty much the only way the little guy can have a chance. It would be nice if the little guy could release retail copies all over the nation - but they can't. That shit is expensive. They can't just release compilation discs because a lot of these guys are making Game B with the profits they make on Game A. Without the sales from Game A, Game B wouldn't even exist. How you gonna make a compilation if you don't have enough money to make even two games?

You seem to have an irrational fear of digital distribution. Seriously, they aren't out to screw you. (Well, most of them aren't, anyway) They just want to sell games without having to go through EA or Activision and pray to God that they think their idea is worth investing in and has 'sequel exploitation potential', then have said big boy companies take "A little off the top" (i.e. A lot of the top) so that they can market it, manufacture it, distribute it, pay off retailers to prominently display it, etc.

Do you seriously think games like PixelJunk Monsters could have survived at retail? As much as I loved the game, I can't fool myself into believing that it could have.

As for playing these games in the future, I don't think its something to worry about. Today's consoles are practically computers, and as such, will be pretty easily hacked in years to come. In the near future, I'm sure PSN, XBLA and WiiWare games will be tossed around much like SNES and Genesis ROMs are now, if they aren't already in that situation.

Well, now since people started talking about full on digital distribution, I guess I'll tell a story too.

I was chatting on another forum a while back, and asked what they thought of full on digital distribution. They said it's good for dl games like the7k said, but it won't take over the whole industry. To make a good game for retail, you have to have all that appropriate content to cram into the disc. Some games will be too big for download, and downloading pieces at a time is going to piss a lot of people off. Some people don't have internet, or don't have good enough connections to download all the stuff. I say don't worry about digital distribution taking over the gaming industry. A lot of people are against it, and developers do want to please their consumers in a way. If the whole audience is against it, then they won't do it. Plus, I think the only way we can, and should, play those big console games like MGS4 or Assassin's Creed 2 is by disc. And I also think that the only way developers can accomplished said titles, are by putting all the data into a disc.

As you can see, I'm all for dl games that can fit the criteria, but strongly against full-on digital distribution.

I don't have a irrational fear about digital distribution, it just sucks. The list of cons out weighs the pros heavily. For the person who likes collecting games like myself, seeing full games available for download scares me. Seeing a downloadable only platform like the PSPGo scares me. Seeing over priced games with no resale value on PSN and Xbox live scares me.

I can see indie devs wanting there game to have and chance and I don't have a problem with mini games being downloadable. It would be cool though if MS, Nintendo or Sony would help these indie devs expand there sales by releasing compilation discs of successful downloadable titles. Call me old fashioned, but when I buy something I like to hold it in my hand. As far as hacking consoles in the future to play games you bought already, you wouldn't have to do that if you really owned them.

Anyways, this argument has been beaten to bloody death.
