Metroid (NES) or Metroid: Zero Mission?

Post by bigcheese »

I remember playing the original as a child, but I know I didn't get too far. But I remember liking it. Now I have an itch to play it again. Is the GBA remake better, or should I play the original?

the remake's got a map. and for that, its infinitely better.

Honestly it's like comparing Final Fantasy Adventure to Sword of Mana. There's a lot of changes that are made in Zero Mission. I'd say you should play both.

I own the GBA version and have played through it many times. It is much better in my opinion (besides the ability to play the old one on a TV, unless you have a Gamecube/GameBoy player). The graphics are extremely well done with an apparent comic-esque palette, and the addition of the new area in the GBA version is pretty well done.

The only problem is that it is not the original Metroid in the sense you are used too (if you have played through it on the NES) but rather an extreme makeover edition of the original. If you don't mind that, you will absolutely love it.

You can pick up Metroid Zero Mission relatively cheap on amazon:

It is also worth mentioning that the 'NES Classics' released the original Metroid on the GBA (without the updated graphics or levels). If you are more into retro-historical accuracy you may like that instead. I have never played this Metroid remake so perhaps you can get another opinion on it, but it is very cheap at around $6.00 for a used copy on amazon:

Hope that helps!

I wouldn't say it's as drastic as that, but I'd absolutely agree with playing both.
First the original, then the remake.

...though I'd suggest printing out a map, maybe even or digging out your Nintendo Power collection for the NES version.

I think the difference in the makeover is huge. Appart from the obvious graphics difference, Samus moves faster and has more movement abilities, which makes a lot of difference in the gameplay.

Also there is something else...

There is an extra stage in Zero Mission that doesn't exist in the original NES, as well

I agree. The ideal thing to do is to play both. If you are planning on playing Zero Mission first, you'll probably never play the original one. But it depends how much you enjoy playing NES games.

Either case, you should buy the original version for collection purposes :)

Reina used the color code for white (hexadecimal FFFFFF) for the text. The trick works on the default white background forum theme - many of the forum users use a dark background theme for the forums as they were used to that before the forum change and it will appear that Reina forgot to do anything to the spoiler text.
