Alright, so my brother-in-law bought an 80gig B/C PS3 from his friend a while back, and the laser messed up. He didn't have warranty anyway, so he opened it up. After a few weeks of hard work, he accidentally lifts up the Blu-ray drive without unplugging that tiny little wire at the side, and rips it. Does anyone know what this wire is and where I can get a replacement? It's covered in red and..black I guess? It fits in the groove at the side of the blu-ray drive, and has that little white square of tape to keep it sealed in.
I guess what it does is connect the blu-ray drive to the PS3, and the commands go through the wire, because after the wire broke, the drive stopped grabbing discs.

Umm...if it helps, I guess I could add that the wire is very small, so if we tried to solder it, we might end up just frying the wire.

A picture of the wire might help. You might just need to take it to an electronics store and ask for some help in finding a replacement for it.

Sorry, but this is probably one of the best pictures I can find.

When you look at the bottom, you'll see that red and black wire with a white square taping it down. My brother-in-law accidentally ripped that wire, and we're having some trouble finding a replacement.

Probably just need to splice it back together or solder in a piece to reconnect.Veno wrote:Sorry, but this is probably one of the best pictures I can find.

As Hobie mentioned, I would just try to repair that wire. That means getting another small piece of wire to join the two broken wires together. Solder the connections to make it last. Or use a good quality crimp.

Pic is small but I believe that's what you're looking for.

Just looks like standard wire. I thought you meant a ribbon cable at first.
Just solder it back together.

Thanks for the opinions, but don't let the looks fool you. It's a very skinny piece of wire, which is why it ripped so easily. I'm thinking about trying to use another piece of wire to solder the 2, but I'm still afraid it might fry. Trust me, this is a pretty thin wire, and I think he ripped it in the most awkward place.

It doesn't matter what guage wire it is. If both the black and red wire are stuck together, split em with a craft knife, then solder em, rap each wire with insulating tape and it will work, I guarantee it.
