The two to choose from are the 60gig with BC via hardware and the 80gig with BC via software, does it really matter?
I have an extensive PS2 and PS1 game collection but I'm cramped for console space. It would be grand to have just one console that would do it all. Are there any real issues with the 80gig unit's ability to run PS2 and PS1 games? They do seem easier to find and as such are somewhat cheaper, but I'll hold out for the 60gig unit if it really does make a difference.

Re: Looking to buy a backward compatible PS3, differences?
there is an official sony website somewhere that will point out the flaws that you may experience with some games. I believe just about every ps1 game is backwards compatible with every PS3 model, including the new slim. The original 60gig ps3 is like 98% compatible with ps2 games, while the 80gig is like 95%. Most major games have little or no issues

The 60GB PS3 has the emotion engine built-in (i.e. PS2 processor). In fact I don't know why ANY PS2 game would have issues in the PS3 for that matter. The 80GB PS3 w/ BC is done via emulation and thus would be more prone to issues. But as previously mentioned, the differences is quite small and probably not worth spending the extra cash.

Re: Looking to buy a backward compatible PS3, differences?
Thanks for the idea. I found a searchable database on the PS3 site:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
It'd be nice if it was just a listing of all games and their remaining issues, if any, but this is better than nothing. I can search for my favorite games to see if there are any issues. It does look like the 80gig unit has had more initial and more remaining issues than the 60giger.
****EDIT: I guess I was posting at the same time as the above post.

That's a great list. Not much on there that's not compatible with either version.

Re: Looking to buy a backward compatible PS3, differences?
Does anybody know of a similar list for EU 60GB PS3s, the only backwards compatible PS3 we ever got was software (thanks Sony...).
The only reason I say this is because my copy of MGS3: Subsistance refuses to work, it just hangs when it tries to load the game. Yet every single compatibility list I've found says that it's 100% compatible...

Could it just be a scratch on the disc? Does it work in a PS2 or another PS3 with compatability?Niode wrote:Does anybody know of a similar list for EU 60GB PS3s, the only backwards compatible PS3 we ever got was software (thanks Sony...).
