The game seems damn near unplayable to me with any other character, but it may just be lack of skill. Nicole seemed a bit overpowered and newb friendly. I did beat it with her

I've also finished Die Hard Arcade a.k.a Dynamite Dekka with the default credits the game gives you. I'm proud of that, but not too proud since that accomplishment was fifty percent skill and fifty percent luck considering how cheap and random that game is. Not to mention its mediocre controls.

Oh how I love this genre. Here are all the beat'em ups I REMEMBER finishing and I'll include anything that is hack n slash:

Streets of Rage 1 and 2
Ninja Warriors Again on the S-NES.
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
TMNT Arcade-I would like to do it on one life someday as I've seen others do it so I know it's possible
TMNT: Turtles in Time on the S-NES-On one life, but that version isn't too hard compared to the arcade
TMNT on the NES-Not sure if this counts, but I'm proud of it since many view it as unbeatable
TMNT II and III on the NES-Used to one credit TMNT II many times
Golden Axe-Almost did it on one life once
Simpsons Arcade-I THINK I finished it. I remember making it to the last boss
Double Dragon and Double Dragon II on the NES
Double Dragon III-Not nearly as hard or cheap as some have made it out to be over the years
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks-HUGELY underrated beat'em up
Renegade on the NES-Another game whose difficulty is overrated. I kicked ass at that game
Bad Dudes on the NES
Final Fight 2 and 3-I was decent at FF3. Think I finished it on one life once and even got the AI partner to the end. That was a hard as hell playthrough though and I know I got a bit lucky
Lord of the Rings Two Towers and Return of the King-LOVED Return of the King. Perfect hack n slash game and it fixed EVERYTHING wrong with the still pretty awesome Two Towers
The Red Star-Well the game is HALF beat'em up so I'll list it. I rocked at that game with Makita
Three Dirty Dwarves-Another underrated gem of a game
Aliens vs Predator-the arcade game
Dynasty Warriors 3-5
Samurai Warriors
Castle Crashers
Dishwasher Samurai-with all achievements too

I don't know if I count games like Ninja Gaiden on Xbox as beat'em ups, but I did beat that on very hard difficulty with Master Ninja ranks. I also finished NG II on the 360 and was working on a Mentor difficulty run that I never finished

You know what I love about beat'em ups and hack n slash games? It's up close and personal. It's old school warfare. Shooters are so impersonal. A guy can get shot in the head by a sniper shot and never even know who took him out. There's just something much more satisfying to me about taking people out in a beat'em up than doing it in a shooter. It's more honorable combat

Okay, that all sounds cheesy but I had to say it. It probably helps that I've always dug martial arts movies and Hong Kong flicks too. So I really love these types of games

Have you played Zeno Clash? It's a nice first-person take on the brawler game. What you are saying really applies well to that game.

(oh yeah, add Zeno Clash to my list of beat-em-ups I beat) :)

Would folks here consider titles like Onimusha, God of War, or Devil May Cry hack and slash? I struggle to call them that, but if folks say they are then I might as well include them. Dynasty Warriors seems to almost instantly get a Yes.

And the sad truth is, I really haven't played as many beat 'em ups as I should. There are quite a few I've just never gotten around to trying, or have only played once.

Yeah, the game is a little too easy with her (if you know her corner traps). I've come really close with Randy. Genjuro is even more powerful than him and I think I could 1cc the game with him if I put enough time into it.

I'm gonna do a little research on that game, but I'm a bit skeptical of first person beat'em ups. The few experiences I've had with them didn't win me over. I didn't like that particular gameplay element in Chronicles of Riddick and just recently I got a ridiculously cheap, used copy of Condemned:Criminal Origins. After playing through level 1 and half of level 2, I turned if off and have been having a hard time going back to it ever since. The story and atmosphere of the game were just right, but the first person combat seemed sloppy and chaotic to me. I like a little finesse in my games and first person combat seems to be something designers do rather sloppily.

I definitely support mentioning Devil May Cry and all of its clones in this topic. They are not beat'em ups or hack n slash games in the traditional sense, but it kind of seems to be what those two genres have evolved into. Although, I do prefer old school style beat'em ups like Castle Crashers being a recent example. I've beaten Devil May Cry 1 and 3, but never could get good enough for the harder difficulty settings or S rank requirements. I still think DMC is the most hardcore of the genre of action games it has spawned since I'm quite good at God of War and Ninja Gaiden games, but found Devil May Cry 3 EXTREMELY challenging.

I personally consider games like Dynasty Warriors to be the modern successors to Beat 'Em Ups. If we count those, then put me down for:
Sengoku Basara 2
Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes
Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires

And I'm eagerly awaiting Sengoku Basara 3. After seeing Dynasty Warriors MULTI-RAID, I'm considering that too, as it seems like they tried to make it more like SB.

Can I just say how cool it is to see some love for these kinds of games on here. Dynasty Warriors games get such a bad rap over in this part of the world(I guess I should specify I live in the US). Granted I don't like how Koei milks the franchise. They're more shameful with their rehashes than even Capcom at its worst. That being said though, I don't know of many games that deliver a similar kind of gameplay other than the Sengoku Basara series(which I haven't played)or 99 Nights so I enjoy the uniqueness of this style of play no matter how much Koei milks it.

And yes, you're right. They are MUCH closer to old school beat'em ups than Devil May Cry style games, right down to the breakable objects with food items in them. What's interesting about the Warriors games is how they sort of have a built in multi-player with so many AI characters on your side even if you play alone. That, along with the strategy elements, rpg elements and huge roster make for a rather huge expansion on old school beat'em up gameplay
