What does the gigabit port have to do with it? Your internet connection is many orders of magnitude slower.

T1 is roughly 1.5mbit/s. While it's dedicated, it's still probably a lot slower than an average DSL connection.

I would say the problem lies at the remote end - i.e.: a lack of servers physically near you. Speaking as an Australian, we rarely see servers in our country for these sorts of services. The various Wii download services are much the same. We get funneled out to the UK, which means streaming video (Nintendo Channel) isn't realtime (and doesn't support buffering when you pause, so it just jerks along horribly) and WiiWare/VC titles dribble down the line (I've had N64 titles take over an hour to download in peak periods).

It's clear that these companies aren't putting money into the distribution of servers. Not that they care, because honestly people will continue using the services regardless of how crap they are. Until they see a hit to their profits, nothing will change.

The exception to the rule in this generation is Microsoft, who actually do have the distributed servers to deal with a widely dispersed user base. For once they did something right. :)

Slow PSN is the rule. Not the exception.

I've got 2 PS3s and I've tried them in two seperate locations on two seperate routers on two seperate connections (I'm running on an 8mbps peak line, can go upwards towards 24mbps off-peak and my mother has a 6mbps line peak) and both PS3's suck shit at downloading.

Updates, demos, games, patches you name it, be prepared to switch the 360 on or play DS for an hour before you get anything done on the PS3 because it takes so damn long.

I want to rage when I switch my PS3 on and it says 'Software update required' Great, I have to wait an hour for a damn 150mb update to download, then spend 20 minutes installing it, then to be greeted by 'you must update this software to continue' upon loading a game, great another half hour wait and another 10 minutes for it to install. Having to wait 2 hours before I'm able to play a new game I just bought is rediculous. Oh wait, it doesn't end there, I've got install this game to the hard drive before I can play? Oh joy of joys MORE WAITING. If I wanted to spend this much time not playing I'd play chess... BY POST.

Not only is the waiting a pain in the arse, having demos for about 30% of the content on PSN is just rediculous, considering that every single XBLA title has a demo and the vast majority of retail games have demos PSN is crap in comparison.

I also hate the fact that retail demos take FOREVER and then take FOREVER to install. I just get the damn demo on my 360 instead. At least with the 360 you download a demo, it completes and you load the game INSTANTLY. WHY THE FUCK DOES THE PS3 NOT DO THIS!?!

I know man. Only joking of course. You might joke that the gigabit ethernet is useless though, with a network this crappy. :D

While I don't hate PSN as much as Niode, I do agree with him and anyone else who said it: Microsoft is winning this by a long shot. I actually have been ignoring most game updates as long as I am only playing for single player, and frankly Im just scared to download any DLC. I started the Little Big Planet demo like 4 days ago, downloading in the backround. Suddenly it popped up in my game menu and I had completly forgotten about it. Nice surprise........i guess.

Yeah, downloads do take a long time, but it doesn't really bother me. I just leave my downloads on over night and tell the PS3 to turn off after they're done.

As long as the games themselves don't lag, I don't really care.

the7k: I don't think you can do that with game updates. If I could I would, but for now I think I will be skipping the 300mb update for Resistance 2. A game I will never play online anyway.

That's too bad - the online of Resistance 2 was the best part, considering they cut out the ability to go through single-player mode with a pal.

I think you can, if you can't, you can set the PS3 t turn off after an hour of inactivity.

Here is the thing I hear the most about the Playstation Network, "The Playstation Network is FREE!" When comparing it to Xbox Live, which is also free, for Silver Members, and paid for Gold members. I guess with the Playstation Network, you get what you pay for. It is ridiculously slow, always is that way. I have both systems, and hate all the waiting involved with Playstation 3, but that is the way it is. Nothing you can do will make it much faster, sorry.

As soon as Silver Members can play games online, then you can consider Xbox Live free. Until that day, Xbox Live will continue to be pay-to-play. Silver isn't an option, it's an insult.

Ah fair enough. :) I missed the sarcasm/humour, obviously. :)
