Ad Hoc Party - PSP through PS3

Post by HellHammer »

After hearing about it for months, Ad Hoc Party was finally released in NA, and I jumped on it as soon as I had the chance. Now that it's downloaded and installed...I'm frustrated and downright confused.

I get the message:
"You must have a wired connection (2005)"

Originally, I went through a ton of issue getting my wireless signal up and running, specifically for the Remote Play ability between PSP and PS3. And all of the sudden, I'm required to have a wired connection?

It doesn't even make sense...I'm perfectly able to connect to the PS3 for remote play through my wireless internet, and then simultaneously access the PSN through the same wireless signal...But I need a wireless connection to use Remote Play AND a wired connection to use Ad Hoc Party?!

unfortunately that seems to be the case. and as far as i can tell they wont make a wireless version either. probably because the psp is already hooked to the wireless connection. then again i don't know much about the ps3 as i do the psp. maybe you should get a long Ethernet cable or something if you don't already have one.

i read that you could do this (once again not saying it works because i don't own a ps3 just being helpfull ^^):
"1) Get an Ethernet cable
2) Get a Laptop
3) Hook up Laptop and Ps3 with said cable
4) Bridge LAN and WiFi on the Laptop, enable “Share Connection”.
5) Run a wired internet test on Ps3, don’t do Automatic, choose manual and when prompted pick Auto-IP/etc.
6) Test passed!"

The reason you need to use a wired connection to the internet is because it uses the WiFi to connect to the PSP itself. WiFi can't connect to two separate things at once, thusly the wired connection.

I'm curious to know how it all works once you do get it setup though, this is basically just a tunneling thing right? Sounds like a really cool idea, I'm glad that it's being implemented, I just wish that the Wii would get a similar function for the DS, that would be excellent.

But it already does this, that's just it.
You aren't able to view streaming video from the internet browser on PSP. However, if you connect to your PS3, (via a wireless signal & PSP's Remote Play) you can use the internet browser on your PS3 to stream video through your PSP.
So, in effect, you're using a wireless signal to connect a PSP to a PS3 and simultaneously using the same wireless signal to connect your PS3 to the internet browser.

On top of that, I browse PSN and download games on PS3 while using Remote Play on PSP all the time.

So...why does this require wired connection? What am I missing?

I remember hearing that with the PS3 wireless connection, the PSP would experience a detrimental amount of lag - and it's essentially because you would be having multiple wireless connections going on.

It sucks, but honestly, even a small amount of lag in a game that wasn't meant to have online play will just be awful. I've heard stories of how people would start out playing a game through online emulators like GGPO, and due to lag, each player would have a different outcome.

For anyone interested, I tried this earlier this afternoon and it completely works! Thanks very much for the info.

Still, to use the all of the features that the PSP and PS3 offer, you need both wireless and wired connections.

That is absolutely bizarre. I'm almost completely certain that WiFi simply cannot connect to two different things at once, so I have no idea if I'm just outright wrong, or if the PS3 streaming thing is doing some black magic.

It could be the lag issue actually, because with a streaming video you can buffer the video to get around any lag, whereas you obviously can't do that with a game. The whole WiFi thing still puzzles me though, anyone with some more tech background want to chime in? I'm ridiculously curious about this now.

I'm almost certain it's because of the lag issue. I finally got a wired connection and after playing the Peace Walker demo while voice chatting with a friend over Ad Hoc Party, I realize the experience wouldn't be nearly as seamless on a wireless signal.

As far as the wireless signal is concerned, I'm simultaneously downloading a demo on my PS3, checking GoNintendo.com on my PSP, and typing this post on my PC, all of which are connected to the same wireless signal. Though there is a significant ammount of lag, it's working.
