I'm sure many of you have heard of The Red Star by now:

I don't own a PS2 or PS3 (and don't plan to) or I would have tracked down a copy of this game right away. After hearing about the game for the last few years I was almost tempted to get a copy even though I wouldn't be able to play it.
Due to its rather weird circumstances, The Red Star was a rather limited release and sold at the budget price point of $20. It's obviously a really good deal for retro fans -- if you can find it.
Hardly any stores -- even gaming stores -- seem to stock the title. The only places you seem to be able to find it is on eBay and Amazon.com Marketplace (from third party sellers) for $30-$40 sometimes.
Keep in mind that this game has only been avalible for purchase for a few weeks now and already some people are paying twice the initial retail price. Are you seeing a trend here?
So I'm kinda thinking that if you really want this for the PS2, you better grab a copy while you can.
On the other hand, I'm also thinking that this is another exellent example of a game that should have an XBox Live Arcade release. The publisher obviously thought that this would be a risky game to release in order to re-coup their investment. However, the word-of-mouth was strong enough on this game to gobble up the limited production numbers.
However, if the game was on the XBLA, the publisher wouldn't have to worry about how many copies to print and could probably even lower to price since it wouldn't have to pay for the physical copies, distribution and letting the stores get their cut of the sales.
What do you think?
The Red Star - Shmup/Beatemup Hybrid To Be Rare Classic?
I ordered the signature series from their website on wed or so. I'm out of town and I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to play it but I'll let you guys know what I think of the game.

I ordered it from here but it looks like their signature copies are gone. http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontPr ... =232812450wyatt wrote:I didn't see where you could order from the official site, do you have a link for that?
Funny, I signed up just to post on this thread.
This game is a beat 'em up in the same spirit and Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn. It's not a 100% side scroller, though - the views go from left to right to top down ala Contra: Legacy of War - it's dynamic based on where you're fighting. Boss battles are Radiant Silvergun / Ikaruga style - it's quite neat how those battles play out.
The difficulty ramps up quite nicely. It's not impossible to beat a level a first time through, though later on you'll be hard pressed to get through.
This is a game that really only appeals to a limited subset of players. Yes, it's repetitive, but aren't all beat 'em ups / schmups? The action is very varied - some levels are *just* boss battles. It's very much planted in old school gaming roots. For $20, you can't possibly go wrong. Given its history, I don't know how quickly it'll get on to XBLA or PSN... one can only hope, it's quite a gem.

Yeah I've had the game now for a while, I've only played it with my gf in the co-op mode so I can't speak for the single player. But that game is fucking hard. No doubt the game kicks your ass like they used to. You die? Yeah you start right at the beginning of the level and you really have to earn your power ups.
Over all though I'm going to say I agree with mtxblau, its a little repetitive some grunts might have been used a little too much but no big deal. For a niche title thats only 20 bucks? can't complain about the slightly unpolished edges. I think the game has a cool feel to it, familiar yet unique.
My gf and I are currently on level 15 we tried it about 5 times and called it quits for the night, the previous level was like 10 times and I have a feeling this level will be similar. Since you get points at the end of each level to buy power ups we had to start completely over 2 times because of miss spent points, poor scores and change of tactics. Our 3rd time though the levels we where doing very good getting S grades (A+) on earlier levels so we could afford the better power ups.
As Masochistic as it sounds I think thats where this game really shines- it's hard but rewarding. Not to mention they mashed 3 of my favorite game genres into 1 game flawlessly beat-em-ups / run and gun / shoot-em-ups.
