Piracy is not so bad
Re: Piracy is not so bad
It all depends on the law. What might be Stealing/theft/copyright infringement in one place is not in another.
Thanks everyone...

All true, very true.Gnashvar wrote:It all depends on the law. What might be Stealing/theft/copyright infringement in one place is not in another.
But when you break it down to brass tacks, there is nothing honorable about stealing from someone's hard work, without giving proper credit due.
I see it like the same as car break-ins. As the owner of the car, you can put all the security you want on it, but some little jack ass who doesn't have the intelligence or wherewithal to earn it himself will find a way to steal it. If you are the owner of the car that has been broken into and can't find the punk who stole, say your GPS system, you are pretty much stuck. Good like finding the asshole that broke into your car.

Most people here are collectors though. So original is top priority for us.
Thanks everyone...

I'm a collector as well Gnash, and it's not like when Nesten/MAME/Gens came out I wasn't all about downloading roms. That's been years ago, and I just wouldn't do it now. I'm not judging anyone, I just think it is morally wrong.Gnashvar wrote:Most people here are collectors though. So original is top priority for us.
But, there are also countermeasures that cost the people that don't steal/infringe/etc. Shoplifting and piracy cost the honest consumers in the long run, anyone who has worked in the retail or retail industry already knows that though. That said, I know people who write movie scripts/comic books/television shows for a living that will pirate movies.

If you would never have bought the game, why would you go to the trouble to pirate it?Inazuma wrote: On the other hand, if you illegally download a game because you would have never bought it normally, that isn't a bad thing.

I know! I never understand this argument. It's not worth paying $ for it but it's worth the effort to pirate it.
Same with the "I just want to try it first" argument. I'm pretty sure Gamefly rents games, whiich allows you to try them first. Legally.

Spore. If I really wanted that game, I simply cannot buy it because of the DRM bullshit with limited installs. I refuse to have my money support something that I hate with a passion. I don't see anything wrong with pirating it in that case. If the game devs would have never gotten my money in the first place, how can it be a bad thing? There is a difference between morals and laws. I try to live my life by morals and dislike doing things that harm others, regardless of what laws say.Limewater wrote:If you would never have bought the game, why would you go to the trouble to pirate it?Inazuma wrote: On the other hand, if you illegally download a game because you would have never bought it normally, that isn't a bad thing.
And I'm sad to see Luke refuses to understand about the difference between theft and copyright infringement. Well, no matter what either of us says or does, the truth is the truth. No way to change hard reality.
If someone physically steals Luke's car, or if they use a magical cloning machine to copy the car for themselves but leave the original car untouched, it's the exact same thing in Luke's mind. They both suck, sure. They are both illegal, yes. But would you prefer to still be able to drive yourself to work, or would you prefer to take the bus?

by your logic though, if you had a different belief system than Luke, then that would make it okay for you to steal his car.Inazuma wrote:Spore. Nope. No matter what I believe, if I stole Luke's car, it would harm him because he wouldn't have a car anymore, and that would make it wrong.noiseredux wrote: by your logic though, if you had a different belief system than Luke, then that would make it okay for you to steal his car.
