What do you want to see in the next gen consoles? (PS4 etc)

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What do you want to see in the next gen consoles? (PS4 etc)

Post by kinn »

The article on IGN (http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/797/797343p1.html) has prompted me to ponder what I, and other gamers would like to see in the next gen consoles like the PS4 etc...Whenever they come out!

Here is what I think:

60FPS requirement - Ok so this is highly unlikely but I would love to see this as a requirement i.e. like how MS requires all 360 games to be at least 720p.

Employ Powerful Tech - With current sales of the Wii and PS3 it may influence manufacturers to all go the "low tech but cheap" route. As much as I love the Wii I just keep wondering what it would have been like if it had more power under the hood. Most people complain about the PS3 being expensive. I do as well! But I commend Sony in packing so much into it and future proofing it a little.

I would love to see a bigger leap in graphics next time. I think we didnt see such a major leap this generation because all that new processing power was used to render everything in higher resolutions. Hopefully next time the manufacturers dont need to up the ante in resolutions again (1080p is fine!) and can concentrate on just using all that graphical grunt in pure polygon, texture, special effects etc.

Find a way to shorten or get rid of loading times! One thing that is still painful to endure is sitting through loading times. Some games now emply streaming technology to eliminate and hide loading times from the player. I would love to see the manufacturers employ some new "jiggery pokery" into the hardware itself to help developers to use methods like streaming more.

Dont be noisy! Please make them less noisy!

I will stop here now since I gone on long enough! What do you guys think?

Exclusive

Post by kevinski »

I'd just like to see more exclusives for each console. I suppose that - to guarantee that - each console would need to be drastically different in terms of what it could do. I'd like to see a console that focused entirely on 2D content, maybe even offering updated versions of classic titles. I love old consoles, but it kinda blows playing those games on composite or s-video connections with the amazing televisions that're available now. And Wii's Virtual Console simply isn't offering the game selection that I'd like to see at this point.

I don't even necessarily want new games. I don't even really want new consoles. I kinda wish that classic consoles would be re-released with updated video output capabilities. It'd be pretty sweet having Genesis games output at 1080p. Composite just doesn't cut it. I still find it to be ridiculous that a lot of devices have composite outputs.

I'd kill for a Genesis, NES and SNES that had HDMI support.

I think you can get what your after via emulation. You can hook up a pc to a HDTV via DVI-HDMI connection. With some emulators you can also improve the graphics by the use of graphic filters etc.

Have a look at some of the very helpful tutorials Racketboy has done here for more info about setting up emulators!

I have three requirements for the next gen:

1. Sega makes a new system

2. Sony does not make a PS4

3. Nintendo doesn't use a gimmick to sell it's next system

Emulators

Post by kevinski »

I know how to set up emulators. I'd just much rather have a means of putting all of those cartridges I have to use without the picture quality looking so disappointing. I don't particularly care for graphics filters. I like the pixelation. :)

The only thing I can honestly say is the ability to copy your games onto your HDD. If the 360 elite did this, I would be in heaven. This would be especially useful to get rid of load times, especially when you're playing games on a high difficulty, such as in Gears of War, where you die a lot. Of course, to make sure you have a legit copy, they'd make it so the game would have to be in the console at least once after you powered the console on. Ooh! It'd be sweet. :)
