Over 1 million banned from X-Box Live for piracy

Post by J T »

Wow. Microsoft just cracked the whip!

http://kotaku.com/5402591/report-xbox-l ... -1-million

I'm not opposed to combatting piracy, but I think it's obnxious when they release these kinds of official statements that it is for the "safety" of gamers. That's such BS! It's for the safety of business dollars.

"Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community remains a top priority," read a statement issued by the company at the time. "All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE.

The other thing that bothers me about this is that Microsoft gets to be the judge, jury, and executioner. It seems unfair that a wide range of users could just be instantly banned without an examination into the case to make sure that the user was actually pirating.

Piracy is such a damn tricky issue. Companies need a way to protect their financial interests and make profit from their work. I just get tired of their anti-piracy measures having potential negative consequences for people that didn't do anything wrong. DRM can screw up a game. False-positives on a massive ban can lock your account. It's just annoying.

I think there is some truth to that. Who says that some day pirates won't be able to run their own code on a console (not just 1:1 backups), but can basically cheat online with backed up discs. They want to ensure that their paying customers don't someday have to play against cheats online.

Well that came out of nowhere. I guess they have the right to refuse service though.

I can appreciate kicking pirates off live, though I thought locking people out of the HDs was kind of a dick move even if people have loaded it with roms and backups. They still probably have stuff on there otherwise too.

But then I don't have a 360 and have only read 2 articles on the banning, so I'm ill informed.

I agree. I'm not opposed to enforcing anti-piracy policies (when they make sense, which many times they do not), but at least call it what it is. Unless there's evidence that these same people are cheating and harming others in the Live community then this is just a way to "other" the pirates and try to create group cohesion behind Microsoft's mission.

What's this about a hard drive?

If you are "banned" you can't hook a hard drive up to the 360?

At least the only people banned were the stupid ones. Anyone who knows a little about technology and recent history should know that this kind of thing happens often. A smart pirate would own a modded console for offline games and a legit console for online games.

Assuming no (possibly) innocent people get caught in the crossfire.
