Best Gamecube Sports Games

Post by noiseredux »

I started a thread a while back asking opinions on various Gamecube basketball titles. But now I'm wondering about all sports in general. I'm not a huge fan of sports games, but I tend to think it's nice to have a solid sport game as a go-to when you're in the mood. For instance, back in my SNES days, I had NBA Jam and NHL 94 that were great games I'd play all the time, even though I wasn't a huge sport fan.

So what are good Go-To's for the Cube?

Best basketball?
Best baseball?
Best hockey?
Best football?
Best tennis?
Best golf
other?

give reasons, screenshots, etc. Let's make this an info-sharing session.

Just to clarify - you want real sports, not Mario Sports or something like NBA Street, right?

well yes and no. I mean, all sports titles are worth discussing here. However, it's pretty much a given that all the Mario Sports titles are good really. But feel free to get specific.

Best real football game is FIFA 2002 - not road to the World Cup. It has solid gameplay and features club teams. Road features the same gameplay but only World Cup teams.

Basketball might be NBA Courtside 2002.

I am not a huge sports fan but Ive logged alot of hours into FIFA over the years.

I have been playing NHL 2006 Dynasty over and over again and it's a blast. Yes it stinks not having the current rosters, but within a couple of years it doesn't matter. I liked 2005, but 2006 adds the create a team and create a player mode. So I created my own team years ago and select what players I want (it's more fun if you don't just pick all the superstars, I prefer the little known players) and play ten seasons in a row. I am on my 3rd run. You get to do a draft every year and develop young talent, which makes you completely forget about not having todays stars. Trading is fun too though the computer always offers you the oldest players for your young talent. This game also has the best controls so far (2005 was good too and a lot complained at 2006, but once you play it you realize it is way better). Plus it has all the foreign leagues and national leagues (like USA, Canada, Russia, etc) and you can play tournaments there, or you can place them in the NHL and see how Latvia compares in an NHL season.

I actually have Fight Night Round Two which I picked up due to Super Punch-Out being included. I'm planning on nabbing NBA 2k3 since I think the 2k series is the best for basketball.

I was conflicted on whether to get NHL 06 or one of the NHL 2k games... what makes one better than the other? I generally like 2k sports titles better than newer EA sports titles, but I've heard that NHL 06 is modeled on the old NHL 94 gameplay?

well since you like NHL 94. you should go for NHL 06. but 2k does make better sports title these days.

football (soccer): ISS2 is much better than any of FIFA series . ISS3 is also quite good, but for me ISS2 is the best football game ever.
other - you should check the Beach Spiker, quite good approach to beach volleyball.
If you like arcade sports, it's a real fun to check with some friends any nba hoopz, nhl hitz, nfl blitz series.
