I'm the newest RROD victim!

Post by dsheinem »

Just printed out the shipping label. Xbox.com said that my "standard warranty" had expired, but that the RROD was covered for a 3 year period...it also said repair would be free, so we'll see.

I bought my 360 used from a forum member, and luckily the RROD warranty still applies (I checked before I bought it). So is there any chance I'll get back a more dependable unit (I doubt this is a Jasper), or do they just temp-fix the problem by re-soldering, etc.? Do I just get another used one? How long should I expect to wait for them to send one back to me?

In any case, what a piece of shit. I haven't used this very much at all, and I believe the person whom I purchased it from when they claim that they bought it new and didn't use it much. I played through the Halo trilogy, Some Raiden Fighters Aces, and 1/3 of Gears of War 1 (and maybe 10 hours total of other games) before the thing died. I'd be surprised if it has seen 100 hours of use in its life, and it is obscene that it would die so quickly.

And yes, it was well ventilated and dust free - it was sitting securely on top of a narrow subwoofer with nothing but air around 2/3 of the unit. I take care of my systems, and all my retro consoles (including cd-based stuff) still work just fine. I was even extra careful with this console to not pause for a long time, not to leave it on for too long, etc. because of the RROD problem. Heck of a lot of good that did.

I had considered going to Wal-Mart tonight to try to grab the arcade unit deal, but frankly I don't think I'll ever buy another one of these again. If I get a RROD when the warranty is through then I'll just sell it for parts and sell away all the games I have (I have about 15 or so that I've accumulated already). So far most of the exclusives have been pretty meh overall, and certainly not worth the hassle! I enjoy RFA, but there are lots of better shmups.

Anyway, like all RROD threads on any other forum I just wanted to vent. Fuck Microsoft.

Welcome to the club. I just sent my 4th one in for repairs on Tuesday. It went in because the video just stopped working for some weird reason and it is also just out of warranty. The really sucky thinga about all this is that the one I sent in was the same one I sent in for RROD exactly one year ago. XD

When you get your unit back from repair or replacement you might want to consider finding a new spot to put it. All of the vibration from that subwoofer can't be good for the XBOX let alone the hard drive. I try to keep all of my consoles far away from the subwoofer if I can help it.

I'm really sorry to hear that man! Hopefully everything goes smooth for you.

I love the 360, but I know so many people who have had the RROD that it is just stupid. Luckily mine hasn't died yet, but I know its only a matter of time, and almost wish that it would be sooner rather than later so that I can just get it over with.

Well I rarely if ever run them at the same time (I don't bother with surround for 360 games), but point taken. I'll look for another place to put the next one (maybe in the freezer?).

Well sure, if you want to kill it with condensation. :!:

Kidding aside, that sucks. I was considering seeing how bad it is in the morning too, but I'm not gonna bother. If I head out for something else I might stop to see the smoldering remains at WM, but I doubt it.

See... I just don't get it.

Why, after seeing and reading of 360s dying again and again and again or RROD, do people continue to buy these things? I just do not understand.

I bought a PS3 (and a Wii, but that's more for my wife). Why? Not because of the games or whatever, but because by the time the PS3 had come out the 360 was already infamous for being very poorly made and prone to failure (and the insane idea to region lock many of the games).

Even people who frequent places like Racketboy still by these things, knowing full well that they can almost expect it to die on them. I prefer for my consoles to still be able to play in 10 years or more. A lot of 360s can't even seem to last a few years, if that.

Can anyone explain to me why the 360 is selling well in other countries (it doesn't sell well here)? I do not understand.
