Is Mass Effect any good?

Mass Effect is a great game, and is actually one of my favorites. Good story, fun combat, and the depth of the character interaction is just crazy.

My only complaint is about the sidequests. They are a bit boring, and all pretty much consist of the same mission objectives with different dialogue. They are only sidequests though, so you can skip over them without consequence.

Just pick Bionic when you get to choose your class. They have more RPG-like abilities, like a magic user. The throw ability and the elevate ability are really fun to use.

agreed- if you don't want it to be a heavy shooter, go with the biotic/omni-tool combo or one or the other. That way you are burning out enemy guns and lifting them in the air and if you need to- mop em up with some pistol fire. The Ai is pretty smart too- they'll back you up pretty well. Like if you lift a guy from cover, chances are your teammates will open up on them.

The game is slow to start- but picks up fast. The ending is fantastic. I would avoid the side quests unless you need to gain some levels as they get really boring and are all generally the same... except for the one on the moon. Go to that one. It is has a really good moment.

The inventory system sucks. Just a heads up.

It's such a common misconception about this game. It's very much an rpg, but it does such a damn good job of LOOKING like a shooter. I mean to the casual observer it really is just a shooter, but once you play it and see all the stats at play and the biotic powers you realize that it's all rpg elements running under the hood, if that makes any sense. It's kind of brilliant in a way. It's actually MUCH better than KOTOR, as great as that game was.

I actually enjoyed the sidequests. There is actually more than just one of them that is unique. So don't think they are ALL the same, though most of them indeed are. The few that are unique are actually pretty cool. This is sort of like how everyone says that Brutal Legends' sidequests are all the same and people who believe that will miss out on the bat family quest, the beer run to the beach, the AWESOME mortar cannon missions, the deer hunting mission and the hilarious wingman mission. It's a shame, as these are some of the best moments in the game
