RetroGen - Portable Sega Genesis System

Well my RetroGen arrived last week and I'm pretty damn impressed with it myself. The screen is bright and clear, makes most games look fantastic. The button layout looks odd but works very well althougth the dpad makes SF2 hard work but then there are far better fighters to be playing now.

The unit features a TV out, a headphone jack and has a regoin switch for those carts that have region locking. I can't comment on that as I dont think I have any region locked carts.

The unit is pretty small, but its quite thick so its very comfortable to hold in my large hands. However the case does feel a bit thin and cheap, not sure if it would withstand to much of a dropping.

I didnt find the sound as bad as everyone is making out - it is distorted but the tiny speaker pumps out a reasonable bassy noise.

The machine is very picky about dirty carts. The first game I tried was Golden Axe 2 and it kept freezing and crashing. I quick rub of the contacts later and it ran fine though.

The built in games are of a fairly low standard, one or two of them might hold your attention for half an hour or so but that is all. I can understand of people preferred the GenMobile for this reason but for me the screen size was more important as I would rather collect carts anyway. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase.

Thanks for the review. If the only difference is the screen size and built in games, I think saving $20 by getting the RetroGen is the better deal.

I'm gonna wait for the Genmobile to come out before I decide.

The Retrogen looks really good, but the Genmobile looks like a more well made system. So if the Genmobile doesn't have many advantages I'll just get the Retrogen.

CurlyPaul, did you try any really action packed games? If so, was there noticable slowdown?

Another thing I'm wondering is if Forgotten Worlds will work, because the game (or just my copy) won't work with a 6 button controller, it just goes straight to the gameover screen.

Is the sound on the Gen Mobile better in games like Sonic 3 or does it still suck like the RetroGen?

Ok, I am really thinking I will be getting a RetroGen for the holidays... The thing is that I can not find a good review. Playing PS4, Bloodlines, and Beyond Oasis are the main reasons to buy it... but I heard PS4 doesn't save. Does anyone know anything about the RetroGen?

I got the Genmobile! I didn't want to start a separate topic about this system. I was suppose to get it for Christmas, but I couldn't resist plus I wanted to see if it worked properly. I played the built-in games and Street Fighter 2, I think its really awesome. The sound isn't the best, but that doesn't bother me, I got this one rather than the Retrogen because of the built-in official games. One bad thing about the Genmobile is that the d-pad and buttons are awkward for fighters with which is a disappointment, but its really great for Sonic, Shinobi 3, and others. I bought it from Amazon.com for $59 w/ free shipping.
