Now, pick up your controller and play through the game again and again for about an hour until you start getting it right or give up and quit complaining because I'm sick of hearing people whining about meaningless stuff like how this "Seven world platformer won't save." or that you're afraid that the "Power will cut off on the final level" as that kind of talk just pisses me off.

Use running jumps often, learn little glitches such as using the running ducking jump in SMB1, if you begin to overshoot a jump push back and aim for the nearest ledge as most of these games actually have pretty robust physics systems, exploit the physics system, stop trying to rush through the game until you've learned more and played more of it, watch youtube playthroughs or ask a friend near you or here on the boards if you really get stuck and remember games are about fun if the game ticks you off then either try to get through it as hard as you can or give up and move on it's that simple.
1) Totally agree. If you can't work through a platformer, or any game for that matter, for a few hours, video games aren't for you. On a very serious level, "If you can't stand a life without instant gratification, you won't live long"-Me.

2) I disagree with my main man modman to go to walkthroughs. Learn and live people.*

*I've watched a walkthrough on how to beat the grim reaper on Castlevania (nes) after two hours of trying to beat him.

I only said it to mean as a last measure, after all I'm trying to get him to stay a gamer so every little bit helps. Personally I can't stand walkthroughs unless they're of the analog paper strategy guide variety.
My Consoles:

Not complaining
just wondering how others did it...
Now I know its the hard way ,

I just want to say is the worst thing for me is meeting a boss that has a specific strategy to beat and you have to face him few times until you figure it out, by then your lives are over and you have to start from the title screen.

As others mentioned, practice makes perfect. I remember growing up with an Atari 800 and not having a lot of games. So I would play those same ones a lot and became really good. I really liked that. Then I became a pirate and was downloading tons of games from BBSes or at swap meets. I found that I didn't get into a game as much as I did before. I was a victim of gluttony.

Fast forward 25 years, my goal is to play all of the Zelda games completely and trying to avoid walkthroughs unless I get stuck for awhile. I've been using emulators/save states because as an adult with kids, I don't have the time to repeat a game over and over like I used to. Plus, I want to be able to get through each of the Zelda games to see what they're all about.

As long as you're getting enjoyment, it doesn't matter how you play the game.

So what console/handheld are you using? What games are you playing?

I've read kingmohd84 say the same thing about recent games before -- that nowadays you can't dedicate yourself to one title for too much time because there are so many games coming out.

Dude, really, you are *not* supposed to play each and every game on the market. You are not. Look for a game you enjoy and play it. Forget that there are other games around. You are not even supposed to have money to buy so many of them.

If people adopted the same mindset regarding books or movies ("I have to read/watch *everything*"), they'd shoot themselves right away.

So true, unless you expect to be a critic. You do have to put time into a game if you expect to complete it.

I'm not going to go all Grandpa here, but kids these day (shit, I just went all Grandpa) are too use to instant gratification. Tough times ahead for those spoiled kids when they get out of school.

All I have to say try it, if it is getting to hard or frustrating get a Game Genie. You don't have to cheat badly like: level select, use this when you get this far but have a gameover then start there again instead of startng from the begining. Infinite lives: use this so you still die but you get plenty of oppurtunities to try again.

And if you want all the new titles like a lot of people are saying join gamefly. Then you can say see I did play almost every new release.

Piracy has really ruined some games for people. Being able to just copy and play games makes people less appreciative of the art and fun in games. I think we enjoyed games in the old days because we maybe had 2 or 3 new games per year unless you were rich. So you explored every nook and cranny of those games waiting for the holidays and maybe a new game. But like you said you just have to pick the good ones and stay away from the crap.
Thanks everyone...
