I recently got a free Halo limited edition Xbox from my friend's brother, who was getting ready to throw it out, and just soft modded it yesterday using Mech Assault and an Action Replay. I'm glad I got it modded, but now I'm not really sure where to go from here.
Since the original Xbox is yesterday's news, I can't really find any solid info on what I can do with it. Most of the stuff I've found is either really out of date or full of broken links. I mainly just want to put an arcade emulator and possibly some other retro emulators on it, depending on how much space everything takes up. I don't really want to put a bigger HDD in it unless I can get one for next to nothing.
Does anyone know which emulators are considered the best? I'm leaning towards CoinOps Re-Ignite for an arcade emulator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3MgoLAbqF4
Also, I'm using UnleashX as my dashboard right now, but I'm not sure if there are any better ones to use.
Thanks in advance for anyone who could advise me on this stuff.

you can start here :
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php? ... 04,111,113
this IMHO, is the best source for your modded xbox needs. Depending on the size of your HD, you may want to install a larger one, 'specially if you are into MAME, and retro stuff.

As the other poster mentioned, I got all of my info from xbox-scene.com. There's also a sub-forum on AtariAge.com that covers the XPort emulator development. The person named Shannon apparently ported a bunch of emulators for the xbox.
If you have access to the BitTorrent site bitgamer.com, you can find a few torrents where someone put together a massive emulator collection for the xbox. (Big Assed Emulator Disc or something like that).

I actually don't have access to bitgamer.com.gtmtnbiker wrote:As the other poster mentioned, I got all of my info from xbox-scene.com. There's also a sub-forum on AtariAge.com that covers the XPort emulator development. The person named Shannon apparently ported a bunch of emulators for the xbox.

I will check out AtariAge.com and xbox-scene.com though. Thanks for the links guys!

Really glad you were able to soft mod your Xbox yourself JFE! Good stuff mate.
Re: Making the most of my soft modded Xbox
Try xboxisozone.com You dont have to be a member to download, but a membership only cost $5.95 a month. There you can download the emulators and games and all sorts of applications.

You'll probably want to change the hard disk if you start grabbing full sets of roms. But just a few don't take that much space. I know MAMEoX will let you run roms off of the network, dunno about anything else. used IDE hard disks are cheap on craigslist, etc these days. Even an 80gb makes a big difference over the stock 4 gb.
I haven't tried Coinops, but I hear it supports fewer games than MameoX. I'm not sure why I'd want to switch from MAMEoX and FBA-XXX.
I think most people find it most convenient to use XBMC as their default dashboard. If there's features of other dashboards you need, you can launch them from XBMC. You will want to have XBMC installed regardless.

Yes, XBMC is the definitive xbox app. It can play any video format you need: avi, ogm, mkv, mp4 and more just don't expect it to play hd content. Reading media form the network is easy to setup and has built in ftp like all other dashboards. It runs great on 720p with component cables. As for upgrading hard drive mine still has the stock one since I only play one game at a time.
Consoles: NES, Famicom, SNES, GC, GB DMG, GB Pocket, GBC, GBA, DSI XL, N64, VBoy, NDS, 3DSXL, Wii, SMS, GEN+CD+32X, GG, SAT, DC, WS, WS Color, NGPC, XBOX, 360, PS1, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, 3DO, CD-I, NGCD, Actionmax, TG16+CD, TE, PCE-DUO, Odyssey2, Playdia, 2600, Lynx & JAG.

Is it pretty easy to install? I'm going to start looking for it right now.executioner wrote:Yes, XBMC is the definitive xbox app. It can play any video format you need: avi, ogm, mkv, mp4 and more just don't expect it to play hd content. CoinOps Re-Ignite Showcase ended up being about 10 gigs, but that is with a full romset. I'll have to trim some of the roms that I'm not interested in I guess.
Re: Making the most of my soft modded Xbox
If you dont want to upgrade the HDD, then I am throwing in another vote for the "Big Ass Emulator Disc" you can find on Bitgamer. It burns to a dvd5 and runs pretty good.
