Assuming these are electronic registers, it's not surprising at all. A geeky gamer type coder deliberately coded this feature into registers. If I coded something as exciting as cash registers, I probably would have done the same thing.

HA! This thread is too funny. I work at Gilbarco and one of our convenience store POS software does in fact make the "Uh-oh" and Sonic coin "chime" sounds. I hear it all day, in fact some in my team made the same comment. It occurs when you "ring" up each item.

On the way out we stopped at a gas station in the nearest town to get some snacks. I'm browsing in the store when I suddenly hear the sound made when Sonic picks up a ring. I go back toward the register, and lo and behold, it's making that sound every time someone gets "rung" up.

According to this I'm not crazy, and this has been done other places.

Anyone else experienced this?
YES YES!!!! OMG I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY! At the truck stop that i get gas from the cash registers make sonic ring noises. It is so strange. The station is an Exxon.

I have heard it several times, unfortunately the person running the register almost never knows it significance.

I've only ever heard it once, at a gas station in the middle of the desert near the Utah / Arizona border. It was awesome.
