Sonic the Hedgehog in cash registers

So this past weekend I went camping way up north, about fifteen miles from the Canadian border. On the way out we stopped at a gas station in the nearest town to get some snacks. I'm browsing in the store when I suddenly hear the sound made when Sonic picks up a ring. I go back toward the register, and lo and behold, it's making that sound every time someone gets "rung" up.

According to this I'm not crazy, and this has been done other places.

I've personally never seen it done in any cash registers at a real store myself, but I have heard it on those recent Progressive insurance commercials with that annoying girl in them.

I've always wondered why GameStop doesn't have either this or the coin sound from Mario on it's registers when you scan an item.

Yeah, they have that at an Exxon near my house. My sister went in there to buy cigarettes or something and I heard the sound a few times, and finally traced it back to the register. When my sister got rung up, I said to the guy, "I'm surprised Sega hasn't copyrighted that sound". He didn't understand at all.

I've heard it before too, I think it's always been at Shell station but I'm not sure. They also go "uh-oh!" when something goes wrong.

i haven't heard the sonic sound but i've heard various other sounds. it's super, super annoying.

The same thing happened to me! In the same area too; near the Canadian border. I also stopped at a gas station, and heard the Sonic "ring" sound at the cash register. It was really late at night, so I thought I was just imagining things at first, but after a few times of hearing it, I was sure it was a sound from Sonic.
