What the HELL is up with the save system in this game? I played for an hour plus and then died. I wanted to turn the game off so I choose the 'save and quit' option. Little did I know that means you actually QUIT that save altogether and now I have to start over! I begin the game with a level 3 character (my status before dying) but what the fuck good does that do me???? I want to play through the game.
Seriously, is there any sort of logic to the save system here? Why am I being punished for saving my game?

Well its like RE (in that it sucks and can only save in certain) but you have to go back to the security room and save at the couch, or you can go into the bathrooms.RadarScope1 wrote:What the HELL is up with the save system in this game? Re: Playing Dead Rising foe the first time
I read an FAQ last night. Turns out the menu choice after death is just "poorly worded" and unnecessarily confusing.
It's not the save system itself I have a problem with. The game was designed as a short game that you play through multiple times. Given the time structure of the game, the designers decided this was the most equitable save structure. Fine, no issue there.
But when I died and had to start over because I chose "save and quit" from the menu that's bunk. "Save and quit" is not a new term in gaming or computing. It's been around for 30 years, and it's understood to mean "I will quit and return to my work/file as it was when I quit." Oh well. I was only 45 minutes or so into the game, and I can just skip the cut scenes. Glad I learned my lesson then and not later.

I've had trouble getting into this game because of the save system too. Too bad, as it seems like it might be fun once it gets going...
Can anyone who has played through it recommend persevering past the first hour or two? Is the payoff there?

I really enjoyed this game, but I never played the main game. I simply did the 7 Day Survivor thing for a friend. So... I never experienced the save function, nor did I experience any frustrations with saving certain survivors. I guess I was lucky.

I really hate this whole conceptualization of game saves as rewards for the player's progress. They are games. They need to be fun, but they don't need to be a life priority with a behavioral reinforcement system to keep me playing for hours on end. If I want to save and quit RIGHT NOW, I should be able to. Save points suck.

Re: Playing Dead Rising foe the first time
I actually likes the whole running time limit and save structure. Sure, it meant you always had to lug your ass back to Otis to save, but really, if you wanted the best ending, missions would be dragging your ass back there with survivors pretty regularly so it wasn't that bad of an issue.
I would definitely push through it though, if not only to play the hilarious boss battles, I mean, if you haven't made it to the grocery store battle, then you at least owe it to yourself to persevere that far to see if it still holds up after that. Even if you fuck up and save quit or screw up some timed mission, your character keeps his level and you'll be breezing by the hordes in the beginning, and the games so short that it doesn't really matter.

Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Yeah, the boss battles(and the music) are all extremely memorable, and the game's only...three hours in length or so? Plus, there are some unlockable game modes, such as the 7-day survivor. It's good stuff, and I really enjoyed my experience with it.

I LOVED DR's save system. I hope it stays exactly the same in the sequel.
They did it this way on purpose, to give you a sense of consequence, which makes it more exciting.
My first playthrough, I didn't even know that you could save in the bathrooms. I just ran back to the safe-room after every mission. And I still had no issues with it.
