ASCII Grip Controllers for PS1/PS2

Ascii made a few one handed controllers like that. There was one for SNES if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure they were aimed at RPG players so you could play with one hand and handle mapping and notes with the other hand.

I totally have one of these in the box for the SNES. I bought it for EarthBound before finding out you can play EB one handed with a standard controller already. WOMP.
Surprisingly enough it's pretty convenient, especially if you like to eat Chicharrons or flip through strategy guides while you play. My friends all made fun of me for using it though...I'll have to dig it out again soon.

Actually....early on these controllers were marketed towards the handicapped crowd.

There is no game that I'm aware of for the PS2 that would allow you to pair this with a mouse....if the game somehow recognizes this as the keyboard then you could use it with Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament and Red Faction 2(LOL).

So how was it all connected on the Dreamcast - did you have the Ascii Grip plugged into the controller one port (w/controller adapter) and the mouse in controller two?

That's exactly how I had it connected.

I just got done trying it out and I discovered that it actually works quite well with shmups! I beat Raiden III (PS2) with it about ten minutes ago and was able to effectively play the game with either hand (left hand worked better and felt more natural though).

I tried with Layer Section on Saturn and it didn't work too well for me.

I have to disagree with you on the d-pad. I found it very sensitive. While playing I realized that I didn't even really need to press in either direction on the d-pad, I could put my thumb right in the middle and kinda work it like I would an analog thumbstick! Works great for me! But keep in mind this is a brand new controller right out of the box.

I have a feeling mine is just worn out then.
