ASCII Grip Controllers for PS1/PS2

Post by Weekend_Warrior »

So today I was lucky enough to stumble upon an interesting controller, the ASCII Grip controller for PS1.

*Note* You can't see in the picture. But there are two trigger buttons underneath (like the Wii nunchuck)

It looked like an interesting one-handed controller and seemed like something I could use for Alien Trilogy on PS1, since the game requires the d-pad (sigh) instead of the analog thumbstick on later fps games. More importantly, it was being sold for $2 brand new! So how could I go wrong?

Now I get home and find out that there is also a Version 2 unit that features the analog thumbstick.

Pretty cool

Erm.. well, I didn't think about that. :(

There goes the idea about using the V2 for any PS2 first-person shooters

Too bad it's not motion controlled. Then it would work great!

Oh well. The one I picked up today will still work for Alien Trilogy though since it's an earlier PS1 game (pre-Dualshock) that only utilized the d-pad for all movement.

It will also work for racing games *shrug*

*Wonders* Could the V2 possibly work in conjunction with a USB mouse on PS2/PS3?

Ascii made a few one handed controllers like that. There was one for SNES if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure they were aimed at RPG players so you could play with one hand and handle mapping and notes with the other hand.

I picked up one of these a month or so ago. Too bad the dpad is trash. For shits I hooked it up to my PSX to Dreamcast controller adapter. I was able to hold the Ascii in my left hand while I used the mouse with my right to play first person shooters. It worked decently enough.

You can use it to play H games...

Quake II on the PS1 has a mouse and controller mode in which the controller is used to move and the mouse is used to look. I don't have the game so I haven't been able to test the Ascii with this mode. Strangely that's probably the best use for the Ascii grip - to play Quake II on the PS1 with a mouse. LOL

It would work so well for those japanese hentai rpg games. You could use the controller in one hand which would free up the other for uhm

I have one of these hooked up to the PS1 across from my treadmill. I use the Gip controller to play RPGs while running and it works well for getting a little exercise and gaming in at the same time.

Thank you for the information!

So how was it all connected on the Dreamcast - did you have the Ascii Grip plugged into the controller one port (w/controller adapter) and the mouse in controller two?

I just got done trying it out and I discovered that it actually works quite well with shmups! I beat Raiden III (PS2) with it about ten minutes ago and was able to effectively play the game with either hand (left hand worked better and felt more natural though).

I have to disagree with you on the d-pad. I found it very sensitive. While playing I realized that I didn't even really need to press in either direction on the d-pad, I could put my thumb right in the middle and kinda work it like I would an analog thumbstick! Works great for me! But keep in mind this is a brand new controller right out of the box.
